Best Central Hotels in Bhubaneswar for Weekend Day Trips

Aug 16, 2026 · Aug 16, 2026

Six Bhubaneswar hotels compared by airport distance, trade-offs and day-trip access to Konark, Puri and Chilika, with a tested pick per traveller type.

Best Central Hotels in Bhubaneswar for Weekend Day Trips

India

Which Bhubaneswar hotel suits a weekend built around day trips? It depends on three things: how early you leave, whether you drive or hire a car, and whether the Old Town temples or the coast take priority. I spent years as a museum night guard in Portland, learning buildings by their quiet. I now judge a hotel the same way, by how few minutes pass between waking and leaving. Below I cover the temple core, the caves, the January music season and the Konark, Puri and Chilika runs. Then I compare six hotels by category, with the trade-offs named.

Weekend Trips That Decide Where You Sleep

The coast sets the base. The Konark Sun Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one private tour pairs it with Chilika Lake. Chilika is Asia's largest brackish water lake, with boat rides to its islands and Irrawaddy dolphins. Tour operators list Satapada as the boat departure point. October to mid-March is the usual best window, and we are at the start of it now.

It depends on your departure time. If the 60 km run to Konark and Puri is the point of the trip, sleep near the airport side. If the temples and museums are the point, sleep closer to town.

The Old Town Temple Core

Bhubaneswar's older shrines cluster in the Old Town. Lingaraj is the city's largest and most sacred shrine, built in the Kalinga style, and its complex holds 150 smaller shrines. Only Hindus may enter it. That is what visitors always asked me by the door: can I go in? Here the honest answer is no for non-Hindus, so plan your time elsewhere.

Rajarani Temple is open to all visitors regardless of religion, and the Archaeological Survey of India protects it as a Monument of National Importance. Bindu Sarovar, a sacred water tank, sits near Lingaraj. Ask the ticket desk at Rajarani for current visiting hours. I never treat a posted time as fixed.

Airport-Side Hotels: Short Runs Out, Longer Rides In

Category advantage: the shortest transfers on arrival day and the shortest start to a coast run. Category disadvantage: more distance to the Old Town and the railway station. Two hotels sit within about 3 km of Biju Patnaik International Airport.

Hotel Kalinga Ashok

Stay here for the Konark and Puri runs. You trade rail-side convenience for an early start. The hotel is 3.1 km from the airport, and its listing puts Konark Temple, Puri Beach and the Sun Temple at 60 km. Rooms are air-conditioned with a minibar and seating area, and there is a garden, free parking, a multi-cuisine restaurant and a 24-hour front desk.

  • Gain: ticket service, luggage storage and free parking for self-drive days.
  • Trade: 7.3 km to the bus station and 17.5 km to the railway station.

Stay here if you arrive by air and want a pool after a day on the road. You trade a pool-free budget for the shortest airport hop in this list, at 3 km. Specs: rooftop swimming pool, fitness centre, terrace, a restaurant serving Chinese, Indian and local dishes, a bar, free parking and a concierge.

  • Gain: a rooftop pool and a gym for tired legs after temple floors.
  • Trade: the airport shuttle is paid, so budget for it. (Google Travel listing)

Caves, Stupa and Hills

The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves lie six kilometres west of the city. There are 18 caves in Udayagiri and 15 in Khandagiri, and King Kharavela had them cut for Jain monks in the 1st century BCE. Kharavela's famous inscription in Hatigumpha and the Rani Gumpha sculptures are the sights to prioritise. Allow at least 2 to 3 hours, and expect monkeys.

Odisha Tourism also lists the Dhauli Stupa among the top attractions. I would pair Dhauli with the caves on one half-day. On my own early rounds I always did the farthest point first and walked back toward the exit.

Business-Class and Family Hotels Within 5 to 8 km Reach

Category advantage: fuller facilities, with a tour desk, car hire or pool on site. Category disadvantage: airport figures of 5 km or more, and in two cases a paid shuttle.

Hotel Swosti Premium Bhubaneswar

INR6528 per night

7.4 Good · 84 reviews ★ 5

Stay here for facilities over proximity to the airport. The hotel is 5 km from the railway station, and its listing puts the State Museum within 8 km and the airport at about 7 km. It has 147 rooms, an outdoor pool, three themed restaurants, a Scottish bar, a health club and billiards. A tour desk and business centre are on site.

  • Gain: the widest facility list here, including a 24-hour coffee shop.
  • Trade: a disco, 8 banquet halls and an outdoor venue mean event traffic, and the airport is the farthest of the six. Official site ->

Itsy Hotels Aasma Luxury Villa

7.2 Good · 84 reviews ★ 3

Stay here if the room is only for sleeping between early starts. You trade pool-and-gym facilities for room size and a work desk. It is 5 km from the airport. Rooms have air-conditioning, parquet floors, a seating area and free toiletries, and the hotel has family rooms, a 24-hour front desk and room service. Guests rate its WiFi, room comfort and room size highly.

  • Gain: full-day security and room service for late returns.
  • Trade: the shuttle is paid, and the facilities centre on rooms rather than recreation. (Tripadvisor reviews)

Events That Reshape the Calendar

The big draw is January. The Rajarani Music Festival is a three-day classical music event organised by Odisha Tourism and the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi, staged in the compound of the 11th-century temple. The Mukteswar Dance Festival uses the Mukteswar Temple courtyard in late January. The Chilika Bird Festival also runs in January.

A Tribal Festival ran from 24 December 2025 to 3 January 2026, and the Dhauli Kalinga Mahotsav was listed for February at the Dhauli foothills. Published dates differ between sources, so ask the Odisha Tourism office at Paryatan Bhawan for the current schedule before you book rooms.

Museum-Side Stay for the Festival Weeks

Category advantage: walking access to a museum and to shopping. Category disadvantage: more on-site nightlife.

Mayfair Lagoon

INR8988 per night

8.9 Fabulous · 185 reviews ★ 5

Stay here for the city side of the trip. The listing calls it centrally located, a stroll from shopping and entertainment, and puts the Tribal Museum 2.4 km away and the airport 6 km away. It has 7 F&B options including Kanika for traditional Oriya cuisine, a spa, tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a fitness centre. It is my pick for the January festival weeks.

  • Gain: free parking, an airport shuttle and tea and coffee makers in rooms.
  • Trade: a club with an in-house DJ is on site, so ask for a quiet room before early departures.

Booking the Day Trips

Private day tours are the easy way to cover the coast. One private day tour combines Konark and Chilika Lake from Bhubaneswar, and a full-day Konark and Puri tour is listed from $140 per adult, with the price varying by group size. At Konark, the Konark Museum adds context to the temple's carvings.

Choose your hotel by how you travel. Self-drivers want parking, and tour-bus travellers want a short pick-up. For current rates across the city, see the official Bhubaneswar hotel rates and availability page.

My Pick and the Setup Behind It

It depends on the plan, but I settled on two. For a weekend that is mostly Konark, Puri and Chilika, I would book Hotel Kalinga Ashok: 3.1 km to the airport, 60 km to the coast, and parking that removes a transfer. For festival weeks and museum days, I would book Mayfair Lagoon, with the Tribal Museum 2.4 km away.

These picks come from comparing listed specifications against my own early-start rules, not from a stay. This guide is unsponsored, and I took no payment for any placement. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking.
