The Best FabHotels Near Lotus Temple for a First Delhi Trip

Five FabHotels-brand bases near the Lotus Temple, New Delhi, compared by distances, sights and trade-offs, with the one I would book for each type of traveller.

The Best FabHotels Near Lotus Temple for a First Delhi Trip

India

Which hotel suits a first visit to the Lotus Temple? It depends on three conditions: the day you go, because the temple is closed on Mondays; the sight you pair it with, whether tombs, southern ruins or the central axis; and how you arrive in the city. I spent years learning a building by its quiet, and I choose a base the same way, by what stands around it. Below: the temple, a comparison table, then five FabHotels-brand listings category by category, with their disadvantages named, followed by transit, food, season and my own pick.

Deciding the base: three conditions that settle it

Question one: which day? The Lotus Temple is closed on Mondays, so a Monday arrival needs a base that is useful for sights that stay open. Question two: what is the second stop? Humayun's Tomb, the southern ruins and India Gate each pull toward a different hotel. Question three: how do you reach the temple? Kalkaji Mandir station, on the Violet and Magenta Lines, is about 10 minutes' walk from it, so any base on those lines works. The answer depends on those three. If you want a wider field before committing, the hotels in New Delhi listing covers more options than the five compared here.

Landmark: the Lotus Temple and what stands beside it

Lotus Temple, Kalkaji, New Delhi

Fariborz Sahba designed the Bahá'í House of Worship as a half-open lotus: 27 marble-clad petals in three rings of nine, around a hall that seats about 2,500. It was dedicated on 24 December 1986 and opened to the public on 1 January 1987. Entry is free, shoes stay at the counter, silence holds inside, and photography in the hall is not allowed. Weekends bring queues, so I would go on a weekday, but hours are the site's to confirm: ask the temple's own attendants about the short readings. What visitors always asked me by the door was whether it was open today. On a Monday, no. The ISKCON temple in East of Kailash is nearby for evening aarti.

Category: East of Kailash base for the temple and the tombs

This listing sits in East of Kailash, the neighbourhood where the ISKCON temple stands close to the Lotus Temple, with Kalkaji Mandir station on two metro lines. It also reaches the gardens. Lodhi Garden is free, about 90 acres, and wraps around the tombs of two sultanate dynasties, including the Bara Gumbad of 1490. Gandhi Smriti, where Gandhi spent his last 144 days, is free to visit. Metro access to Lodhi runs through JLN Stadium or Khan Market on the Violet Line.

Stay here for the temple-and-tombs pairing; you trade a short airport run for sight access. The listing gives 6 km to Humayun's Tomb, 7 km to Tughlaqabad Fort and India Gate, and 8 km to Lodhi Gardens and Gandhi Smriti.

  • Pro: free on-site parking, an electric vehicle charging station, a lift and a 24-hour front desk.
  • Pro: family rooms with air-conditioning, a seating area, a continental breakfast and room service.
  • Con: Delhi International Airport is 21 km away, the longest run of the four properties measured to it.

This is the one I would book. Full listing: where to stay in East of Kailash.

Landmark pairing: Humayun's Tomb, Sunder Nursery and Nizamuddin

Humayun's Tomb was built in the 1560s and 1570s under his widow Bega Begum, in a walled char-bagh garden. It is the first garden tomb on the subcontinent and a UNESCO site since 1993. More than 150 Mughal family members lie in its chambers. The World Heritage Site Museum, opened in 2024, sits mostly underground at the shared entrance with Sunder Nursery, which takes a separate ticket. Then walk to Nizamuddin dargah, where qawwali is sung on Thursday evenings; women watch from the courtyard. I would book ASI e-tickets and ask the site's ticket desk for the day's hours.

Landmark pairing: Qutb Minar, Mehrauli and the Chhatarpur side

The Qutb Minar stands about 72.5 m, the tallest brick minaret in the world, begun around 1199. You cannot climb it, since the interior closed after an accident in December 1981. The Mehrauli Archaeological Park next door is about 200 acres, free and unlit; Jamali Kamali and Rajon ki Baoli reward a morning. Qutub Minar station is on the Yellow Line, then an auto. Chhatarpur Mandir, a vast marble complex near Mehrauli, is very busy at Navratri, which begins on 7 April 2027. I would go early; the ASI desk confirms hours.

Landmark: India Gate, Kartavya Path and the January ceremonies

India Gate, a 42 m arch by Lutyens, was built between 1921 and 1931. Kartavya Path runs about 3 km west to Vijay Chowk, and the National War Memorial opened just east of the arch in February 2019. The lawns are busiest in the evening. The Republic Day parade falls on Tuesday 26 January 2027 and Beating Retreat on Friday 29 January 2027; tickets go through the Aamantran portal against original photo ID, and central roads close.

The Airport Express runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi station in under 20 minutes, and the Magenta Line serves Terminal 1 and continues to Kalkaji Mandir. Foreign visitors must complete the online e-Arrival card within 72 hours before landing; it is not a visa, and e-Visa applications go only through the government portal.

Transit and tools: metro tickets, payments and your phone

The Delhi Metro is the practical way to reach Kalkaji Mandir. Buy single-journey QR tickets in the official DMRC app, on WhatsApp or in UPI apps; a single QR must be used from its issuing station within a time limit. Reloadable multiple-journey QR tickets began in September 2024, and NCMC cards work at the gates. The first coach is reserved for women, and every bag is screened. On Holi morning trains start only in the afternoon. For payments, UPI One World is a prepaid wallet issued against a passport and visa. SIM cards also need both documents. Carry small notes for shoe minders.

Food category: cheap and regional eats on the metro lines

Start with the free langar at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib: head covered, shoes off, seated on the floor. For regional range, Dilli Haat INA, entered through a small ticket, has state food stalls. Humayunpur serves North-Eastern and Southeast Asian food, with Mahelal's at the budget end. Chittaranjan Park Market 2 has Bengali snacks and sweets, with Durga Puja pandals open about 6 to 8 October in 2027. Choose busy stalls, drink sealed water and carry oral rehydration salts. At Fabhotel Lord Inn, the shared kitchen is the cheapest breakfast fix.

Season category: when the choice of base matters most

October to March is the usual window, but fog in December and January delays flights and trains, and the air-quality index often reaches the very poor band; check it each morning and keep indoor plans. April to June is fiercely hot, and the monsoon brings waterlogging. Dates that reshape a stay in 2027: Republic Day on 26 January, Holi on 23 March and Diwali on Friday 29 October. Monday closures also apply to the Red Fort and Akshardham, so plan Monday around open gardens. Air-conditioned rooms matter in summer, whichever hotel you choose.

Verdict by traveller type: my picks

First visit, temple plus tombs: Fabhotel Majestic Jpm I, because 6 km to Humayun's Tomb and free parking cover most days. Southern ruins: Fabhotel Lord Inn, with 7 km to Qutub Minar. Central axis in January: Fabhotel F9 Nfc. Couples exploring Mehrauli: Via Chattarpur Enclave. Early flights: Via The Grand Bella. My own pick is the Majestic: arrive Tuesday to Sunday, walk to the Lotus Temple on a weekday morning via Kalkaji Mandir, and ask its attendants for that day's hours. No hotel paid for placement here. Prices and availability can change, so confirm when booking; all accommodations in New Delhi lists alternatives.
