Enrich your life and tell the story of China, by AHMED MUKHTIAR of Harbin Engineering University
I obtained the CSC Scholarship for a Master’s degree at Harbin Engineering University on August 27, 2017, which I was not expecting but it was like a dream come true. It was a pivotal thing to remember. It was a pivotal point in my life that shaped me into the person I am today.
Memory of graduation
When I started my graduate studies, I couldn’t help but think how nerve-racking it would be to join an environment having people from different countries. It’s nothing like my undergraduate degree, where my fellow students were practically the same. A graduate degree is different! I was surrounded by people from all corners of the world, backgrounds, and careers, an aspect I came to find that enriched my learning experience. During my three years, I learned a lot from my classmates and gained valuable insights into all their different professions and skills.
Actively participate in various activities
When people found out about my graduate studies at Harbin Engineering University, Harbin, China, a lot of them asked surprisingly how I got this scholarship and considered it. As someone who values education and who believes in the importance of learning something new every day, I decided to obtain a graduate degree and expand my knowledge and learn about new cultures and different countries life style.
On a personal note, it was difficult to balance life here in a different country. Finding that balance required a lot of time, dedication, and energy. Fear of failure haunted me throughout my journey, but with the support of new and old friends, closest friends and, family here, I was able to stay strong and eliminate this fear.
A master’s degree is not easy or smooth. It’s demanding, challenging, exhausting and stressful, comprising of sleepless nights and a lot of learning to do in a short period. I had a couple of breakdowns along the way. But what helped me get through the tough times was the constant reminder of my goal and conjuring up the motivation to get back on the right track. The smallest gesture made all the difference in my days; I had a sticky note on the comments page with a written reminder of why I had decided to pursue my Master’s degree. And this little note helped me persevere throughout this tough journey.
As said ‘’When you achieve your goal, there might not be a lot of people who are happy for you. But the one person who should be the proudest and happiest is you. And the people who truly love you will be there to congratulate you and celebrate your success’’.
During the three years of university, I’ve taken a lot of courses such as Nanotechnology (纳米技术), Material Chemistry (材料化学), Modern research Methods of Material (材料现代研究方法), Functional Materials (功能材料), Core-Shell Structured Micro-/Nanomaterials (程序核壳结构微/纳米材料), Chemical Engineering and Technology Comprehensive Experiment (化学工程与技术综合实验) and also other related courses which I’m interested in and are helpful for further academic study and the future work and With the help of friends and group study I completed my course work with 92% score.
At the same time, I also published research articles in SCI-indexed journals and EI-indexed journals as well. My research at HEU comprises two areas namely, Electrochemistry (Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium and, Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Acidic Medium). As a Master's degree student, I have published 11 journal papers in SCI and EI indexed related journals. 02 of them as first author and 9 of them as co-author and the other 3 papers are submitted as first author and co-author as well.
Due to research capabilities, I worked as an active member of the Academic department of the International Students’ Union at HEU. I like all kinds of sports. Badminton is my favourite. I always play Badminton with my classmates in my spare time. University life is a colourful and trying experience. To enrich my university life and improve my physical and practical ability, I was also worked two years in the Sports department from 2017 to 2019. I was also awarded best International Students’ Union active member in the Sports department and because of my research capabilities, sports craze, and academic interest, I was awarded Outstanding Graduate Award 2020 as well.
I am really glad and thankful to my supervisor, co-supervisor, and my labmates who helped me more than enough during my master's degree research. I was an amateur and my lab mates under the supervision of my supervisor and co-supervisor taught me different experimental lab skills related to my research and also beyond the research field as well. It was my pleasure to study here at Harbin Engineering University, I am very thankful to, College of International Cooperative Education teacher and dorm staff for their tremendous guidance, care, and suggestions.
I am extremely thankful to the China Scholarship Council, which has become a stair for me to succeed and brought me to Harbin Engineering University. During my tenure at Harbin Engineering University, I endeavoured to learn effective and efficient tools and procedures that help me to become a successful person.
I must acknowledge the comprehensive instructional program provided within a high-quality educational framework, as well as the well-run administration and facilities. Many who leave their mark before stepping out of the university gates as postgraduates at the end of their esteemed degree will cherish the grandeur of the magnificent Chinese-style building even more.
I was extremely grateful for all the support I had during my journey, but I made sure to indulge in my success on the inside. I constantly told myself how proud I was that I achieved this personal goal. At the end of the day, the whole point of personal success is not to display in front of others, but to be left pleased and fulfilled.
After my Master's Degree at HEU
After receiving my master's degree at HEU, I planned to apply for the Ph.D. degree and applied to different universities including HEU after so much effort and tries I have been awarded a Ph.D. fully-funded scholarship at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is among the best universities in China.
