Confucius Institute Scholarship

(1) Scholarship introduction

To meet the international community’s increasing demand for Chinese language education talents, promote the development of Chinese language education around the world, and help the growth of international Chinese language education talents, the Ministry of Education’s Sino-foreign Language Exchange Cooperation Center (hereinafter referred to as the Center) has established an international Chinese teacher scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Center) Referred to as scholarship), focusing on training qualified overseas Chinese teachers. Confucius Institutes, independently established Confucius Classrooms, some Chinese test sites, relevant foreign educational institutions, Chinese teachers majors in universities/Chinese departments, relevant foreign Chinese teaching industry organizations, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad, etc. (hereinafter referred to as recommended institutions) Excellent students and in-service Chinese teachers can be recommended to Chinese universities (hereinafter referred to as host colleges) to study and further study Chinese international education and related majors.

Founded in 1941, Beijing Foreign Studies University is located on North West Third Ring Road, Haidian District, Beijing. It has two campuses, east and west campuses on both sides of the third ring road. It is directly under the Ministry of Education, the first batch of "211 Project" colleges and universities, "985" Advantageous subject innovation platform universities, and the first batch of "double first-class" construction universities. It is a foreign language university with a long history, the most teaching languages, and a complete level of education among Chinese institutions of higher learning. It is the first institution of higher learning to accept foreign students and conduct Chinese language teaching in China. one.

Beijing Foreign Studies University currently offers 121 undergraduate majors and teaches 101 foreign languages. In the fourth round of national subject evaluation results in 2017, the school’s foreign language and literature first-level subject rating was A+, ranking first in the country. The admission categories of Beijing Foreign Studies University's 2021 International Chinese Teacher Scholarship include: Master of Chinese International Education, Bachelor of International Chinese Education, One-year Seminar, One-Semester Seminar, and Four-week Specialized Seminar.


(2) Enrollment object

1. Non-Chinese nationals;

2. Physical and mental health, good character and learning;

3. Interested in engaging in Chinese education, teaching and related work;

4. The age is 16-35 years old (unified on September 1, 2021). In-service Chinese teachers are relaxed to 45 years old, and applicants for undergraduate scholarships are generally under 25 years old.


(3) Types of scholarships and eligibility for application

1. Master's degree students majoring in Chinese International Education

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 2 years.

Have a university degree.

A minimum score of 210 in the HSK test (Level 5) and 60 in the HSKK (Intermediate) test are required.

Those who provide a work agreement or relevant certification for the teaching institution to be taught after graduation are preferred.


2. Undergraduates majoring in Chinese International Education

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 4 years.

Have a high school diploma.

A minimum score of 210 in the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in the HSKK (Intermediate) test.


3. One-year postgraduate

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 11 months, and foreign students in China will not be admitted.

International Chinese Language Education: A minimum score of 270 in the HSK test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score;

Chinese Language and Literature: A minimum score of 180 in the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 in the HSKK (Intermediate) test;

Chinese language study direction: A minimum score of 210 in the HSK test (Level 3) is required. Those who provide HSKK scores are preferred.


4. One-semester graduate student

Enrollment in September 2021 and March 2022, the funding period is 5 months.

Those who have X1 and X2 visas in their passports are not admitted.

International Chinese Language Education, Chinese Language, and Literature: A minimum score of 180 in the HSK test (Level 3) and an HSKK score.


5. Four-week trainees

Enrollment in July or December 2021, the funding period is 4 weeks.

Those who have X1 and X2 visas in their passports are not admitted.

Have HSK scores.

The recommending organization organizes a group to register, and contact the school in advance to determine the study plan in China, and submit it to the center for approval in advance. Each group has 10-15 people.

(5) Application process

1. Starting from March 1, 2021, applicants can log on to the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship Application Website ( to apply for the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship.

Log in to the scholarship website to inquire about recommending institutions and receiving institutions; submit application materials online, pay attention to the application process, review opinions and scholarship review results; scholarship recipients and receiving institutions confirm the procedures for studying in China, and print the award certificate online; press the receiving institution Enter the journal at the time specified in the school admission notice.

2. Applicants to our school also need to log in to our school’s international student management service platform, register a personal account, and complete online registration.

3. The center entrusts an expert group to conduct centralized evaluation: based on HSK and HSKK test scores and levels, taking into account factors such as country, the scholarship evaluation will be completed about 3 months before admission and the evaluation results will be announced.


(6) Application materials

1. Proof materials related to all applicants

  • Scanned copy of passport photo page
  • Scanned copy of HSK, HSKK score report (valid for two years)
  • Recommendation letter from the person in charge of the recommending agency


2. Proof materials related to academic degree students

  • Provide the highest degree certificate (certificate of expected graduation) and school transcripts
  • The Master of Chinese Language Education must provide two recommendation letters from supervisors with titles of associate professor or above, and those who provide work agreement for the teaching institution after graduation will be given priority.


3. In-service Chinese teachers must attach the in-service certificate and recommendation letter issued by the employment agency


4. Applicants under the age of 18 must submit a certificate of entrustment signed by the guardian in China


5. The other certification materials that Beijing Foreign Studies University needs from applicants shall be subject to the requirements of the online registration system, including but not limited to:

  • "Confucius Institute Scholarship Application Form"
  • The "Enrollment Commitment" is provided for download by the system and uploaded after being signed by the applicant.
  • The "Guardian Guarantee" is available for download by the system and uploaded after being signed by the applicant.
  • "Foreigner Physical Examination Record", this form is uniformly printed by the Chinese Health and Quarantine Department, and the system provides downloading for reference.
  • "Research Plan", written in Chinese, with more than 1500 words for applicants for Master of Chinese Language Education.

Note: If the above application materials are not in Chinese or English, corresponding Chinese and English translation notarized documents are required.


(7) About the Chinese Bridge winners

Those who have won the 2021 "Confucius Institute Scholarship Certificate" in various Chinese Bridge competitions, log on to the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship (Confucius Institute Scholarship) website, and submit application materials to the target receiving institution with the scholarship certificate.

(8) Funding content and standards

The scholarship funding includes: tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance.

1. The tuition fee is coordinated by the school for the training and management of scholarship students, cultural activities, and organizing the participation of Chinese tests. The tuition fee does not include teaching materials and entrance fees to tourist attractions.

2. The accommodation fee is coordinated and used by the receiving institution to provide students with free dormitories; those who choose off-campus accommodation after application for scholarship and approval by the receiving institution, the school will pay the accommodation fee on a monthly basis. The standard is RMB 700 per month.

3. Living expenses are paid by the school every month. The standard for undergraduates, one academic year, and First semester trainees is 2500 yuan/month; for master students majoring in Chinese to foreign education, it is 3000 yuan/month.

Scholarship students will enter the journal at the time specified in the school's admission notice, otherwise the scholarship qualification will be cancelled. Those who register before the 15th of the month will receive the full living allowance of the month; those who register after the 15th will receive a half-month living allowance of the month.

Scholarship students who leave China for more than 15 days due to personal reasons during their studies will not be paid for their living expenses during their absence.

Scholarship students who suspend or drop out of school due to personal reasons, or receive disciplinary sanctions from the school, will be suspended from the payment of living expenses from the date of suspension, withdrawal or receiving notice of sanctions.

The living expenses of graduates will be paid to half a month after the completion date determined by the school.

4. The comprehensive medical insurance premium shall be implemented by the relevant regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education for studying in China, and shall be purchased by the school in a unified manner. The standard for four-week trainees is 160 yuan/person, the first-semester trainee is 400 yuan/person, and the standard for more than one academic year is 800 yuan/year/person.


(9) Study assessment

All students who have studied for more than one year are required to participate in the annual review. For details, please refer to the "Annual Review of International Chinese Teacher Scholarship".


(10) Other

Part of the scholarship funding includes tuition, accommodation and comprehensive medical insurance.


(11) Statement

1. Application materials that are incomplete or do not meet the enrollment requirements will not be accepted.

2. If the application materials are falsified or filled out and submitted by others, once verified, the application qualification will be cancelled.

3. Winners who are unable to register for any reason should inform the International Students Office of the University in writing 15 days before the date of registration and specify the reason. Those who fail to register without reason will be disqualified for scholarship.

4. The scholarship qualification will be cancelled if the admission physical examination is unqualified, or if you withdraw from school or suspend students in the middle of the school.

5. Matters not covered are subject to the "Application Procedures for International Chinese Teacher Scholarship (2021)" and the "2021 Beijing Foreign Studies University International Student Admissions Guide".
