1. Q: What are the types of scholarships and how to apply?

A: Beijing Normal University provides a variety of scholarship for international students, including Chinese Government Scholarship (Type A and Type B), Confucius China Studies Program, International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship, BNU New International Student Scholarship, Beijing Normal University "Silk Road Muduo" Scholarship, The Belt and Road School Scholarship (only for prospective students of The Belt and Road School).

Applicants of Chinese Government Scholarship, Confucius China Studies Program, and International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute) Scholarship applicants should apply in Beijing Normal University "International Students Online Service System", and apply the system of scholarship funding agencies, i.e. China Scholarship Council or Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban).

Beijing Government Scholarship, BNU New International Student Scholarship, Beijing Normal University "Silk Road Muduo” Scholarship, The Belt and Road School Scholarship (only for prospective students of The Belt and Road School), the above scholarships are abbreviated to BNU Scholarship. Applicants should apply online (BNU system), upload the application materials and send paper materials to BNU.

2. Q: Can I apply for scholarships for non-academic programs?

A: Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship, and BNU New International Student Scholarship are only allowed to apply for academic programs. Confucius Institute Scholarship allows one-year and one-semester advanced students to apply.

Beijing Government Scholarship, BNU New International Student Scholarship, and Beijing Normal University "Silk Road Muduo” Scholarship are only allowed to apply for academic programs. Confucius Institute Scholarship is allowed for one-year and one-semester advanced students to apply for. Chinese Government Scholarship and Confucius China Studies Program allows students of non-academic programs.

 

3. Q: When are the yearly admission brochure and major catalog released?

A: Degree Program (undergraduate & graduate): From the end of October to the beginning of November of each year. For more details, please pay close attention to the publication time of the general rules on the website of international student admission to our university.

 

4. Q: What is the application time?

A: Degree Program (undergraduate & graduate): Start from the end of November or early December of each year and end at the end of April of the following year. Chinese Language Program:

Fall semester: from the beginning of April to the end of June

5. Q: How to pay the application fee?

A: Through online payment. Cash payment is not accepted.

 

6. Q: Can Chinese citizens with the right of permanent residence in foreign countries apply for an international student program?

A: According to the document of the Ministry of Education, applicants of non-Chinese nationality can apply for the international student program of BNU. Those who have permanent residence in foreign countries and retain Chinese nationality are not allowed to apply for this program.

 

7. Q: Can former Chinese citizens who have obtained foreign nationality apply for an international student program?

A: Undergraduate: If both parents or one of the parents of the applicant are Chinese citizens and reside in a foreign country, the applicant should have foreign nationality at birth and hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate for at least 4 years. In addition, more than 2 years of actual residence in a foreign country has been recorded in the last 4 years (ending on April 30, 2021). The actual residence of more than 9 months in a year can be counted as one year, subject to the entry and exit signatures. For residences of mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan who immigrated to foreign countries and are applying as international students, please refer to the requirements above.

Postgraduate: applicants who have naturalized as foreign nationality after being former Chinese citizens should provide the documents certifying the cancellation of their original Chinese household registration and renunciation of Chinese nationality.

 

8. Q: Does Beijing Normal University accept international students transferred from other universities in China?

A: No.

 

9. Q: Must the application materials be in Chinese or English?

A: Application materials should be in Chinese or English. Materials of other languages, notarized or certified translation should be provided

 

10. Q: Can application materials be submitted by email? Can it be handed over by other people?

A: Applicants should apply to Beijing Normal University International Student Online Service System and upload application materials. After passing the preliminary examination, the paper version of the application materials should be mailed according to the requirements of the enrollment brochures. Application materials sent by e-mail are invalid. All the materials should be submitted or sent before the deadline. Applicants with incomplete materials will not be accepted.

12. Q: What are the key majors in BNU?

A: Beijing Normal University, a key university under the administration of the Ministry of Education, is a renowned institution of higher education known for teacher education, education science, and basic learning in both the arts and the sciences. Six first-level disciplines including Pedagogy, Psychology, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Drama Film and Television, and Geography are awarded A+. Pedagogy, Psychology, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Mathematics, Geography, Systematic Science, Ecology, Environmental Science and Engineering, Drama, Film and Television, and Linguistics are selected into the list of “double first-class” construction disciplines of Ministry of Education. In addition, communication, economy, and management are also very popular among international students.

 

13. Q: There is no Confucius Institute in my place, and I have not been recommended by the embassy. I have never been to China and do not know the teachers of any receiving institutions. Can the recommending institutions fill in the receiving institutions I intend to apply for?

A: Yes, but you should take the initiative to contact the receiving institutions for permission. The contact information of the school can be found in the “receiving institutions” column of the website. In countries without Confucius Institutes, applicants can submit their applications through relevant universities that offer Chinese majors.

 

14. Q: How long is the undergraduate educational system? What is the language of instruction?

A: 4 years for all majors. The language of instruction is Chinese. Students who have completed the study plan specified in the teaching plan passed the examination, and passed the graduation thesis defense can obtain the graduation certificate. Those who meet the requirements of a bachelor’s degree will be awarded the diploma.

 

15. Q: I am still a senior high school student during the application stage and have not obtained the graduation certificate. Can I apply for the undergraduate program?

A: You can submit the expected graduation certificate. If you are admitted, you must submit the original or notarized copy of the graduation certificate before you register, otherwise, you will be disqualified.

 

16. Q: What majors can undergraduates choose? Can I transform to other departments or majors?

A: There are 7 categories and 37 majors in our university. For more details, please refer to our website for international student enrollment. After admission, you can apply for the transformation of departments or majors within the specified time. After application, you need to take the examination of the target department. For more details, please consult each department.

 

17. Q: How many prospective majors can I fill in at most?

A: When you apply online, you can fill in two majors, and these two majors must belong to the same examination category (except for Chinese Language major, but you must take two kinds of examinations). Please refer to the catalog of admission majors for more details. Applicants for the Chinese Language major and Teaching Chinese to Other Languages major can apply for any other majors at the same time but must meet the requirements of specific majors and take all the examinations of the two categories.

 

18. Q: How much is the tuition fee?

A: For Literature and History majors: 12400 yuan/semester, 24000 yuan/year

For Science, Engineering, and Art majors: 14250 yuan/semester, 27700/year

 

19. Q: Do I still need to take the exam after passing the material review? When is the exam time?

A: Examination time: the beginning of April. Please pay close attention to our admission brochure for more details. Examination subjects: written examination and professional interview. The written examination includes the Test of General Ability (TOGA), Essay, Mathematics, or English. English examination is set for applicants of Arts majors, mathematics examination is set for applicants of science and engineering majors. Please refer to the major catalog of undergraduate students for more information about the content of the examination. Applicants for the exemption of written examination will obtain the result of the written examination exemption review. Those who pass the review do not need to sit for written exams, they must however be interviewed. The examination method will be determined according to the situation of local epidemic prevention. The specific arrangement will be informed to the applicant through the system and e-mail then.

 

20. Q: When can I check the admission results?

A: At the end of May, the admission results can be inquired through Beijing Normal University’s international student admission website. Phone inquiries will not be accepted.

 

In the middle of June, “Admission Notice” and other admission materials will be sent to successful candidates. When applying please clearly indicate where the admission letter should be sent to and your contact information.

 

21. Q: How long is the undergraduate educational system? What is the language of instruction?

A: 3 years for Chinese-taught academic masters and doctoral students;

2 years for Master of Teaching Chinese to Other Languages major;

2 years for English-taught academic masters and doctoral students;

The language of instruction is Chinese or English.

 

22. Q: What are the language requirements for English-taught projects?

A: Please refer to the requirements in different departments and colleges.

 

23. Q: I am still studying in the last year of a bachelor's degree or a master's degree during the application and have not obtained the graduation certificate. Can I apply for a master's or doctor's degree?

A: You can submit the expected graduation certificate. If you are admitted, you must submit the original or notarized copy of the graduation certificate before you register, otherwise, you will be disqualified.

 

24. Q: Is there any format required for the recommendation letter?

A: No, but it needs to be signed by the recommender and it must be the original copy.

 

25. Q: How to admit graduate students? Are there any examinations?

A: There is no unified examination in our school. The selection method of our school is the examination and admission system. After applicants submit their paper materials, the preliminary qualification examination will be conducted by the department and college, and the interview will be organized if necessary. The interview mainly investigates the applicant’s professional foundation, Chinese level, and comprehensive quality.

27. Q: How many times does the Chinese Language Program make admission each year?

A: Chinese advanced students, general advanced students, and senior advanced students are enrolled twice a year in the fall semester (September) and spring semester (March).

 

28. Q: What are the differences between general advanced students and senior advanced students?

A: General advanced program enrolls sophomores or students of the higher degree to take undergraduate courses in departments and schools for one semester or one year.

The senior advanced program enrolls postgraduate or students of the higher degree to take postgraduate courses for one semester or one year.

 

29. Q: When is the application time?

A: Spring semester: from October to the end of November;

Fall semester: from April to June. Please refer to the admission brochure for specific application time.

 

30. Q: Can those who have no basic knowledge of Chinese be enrolled as Chinese advanced learners?

A: Yes. We welcome students of all different Chinese levels to study in our school. We have 9 classes of different levels in our school. After the registration, you need to take a class test to decide which class to study in.

 

31. Q: What are the credit programs?

A: Our school has an English-taught credit program, undergraduate credit program (general advanced students), graduate credit program (senior advanced students)

English-taught credit program: Courses are mainly about Education, Economics, Management Theory, Environmental Science, Geography, and Law, which are set up in spring and fall semester respectively.

Undergraduate credit program (general advanced students): the study time is one semester or more. The registration deadline for the spring semester is November, and that of the fall semester is June.

Graduate credit program (senior advanced students): the study time is one semester or more. The registration deadline for the spring semester is November, and that of the fall semester is June.
