I. Application Requirements
Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding ordinary foreign passports, be in good health and have corresponding academic degrees and language competence.
According to the Ministry of Education, Chinese citizens who have emigrated to other countries and are applying to BSU as international students must present valid passport or citizenship documents obtained before June 1, 2017, as well as proof of their renunciation of Chinese nationality, along with proof of residence abroad of at least 2 years by June 1, 2021 (9 months of residence abroad per year may be considered as one year, subject to entry and exit signatures).
(I) Application Requirements for Undergraduate Programs
1. Foreign citizens at or above the age of 16 and under 30, who are in good health and have obtained a diploma of graduation equivalent to that issued by a Chinese senior high school;
2. Have passed HSK Level 4 or above; and
3. Have passed IELTS (at or above 5.5 points) or TOEFL (at or above 60 points); required for ESL (English as a Second Language) students only.
(II) Application Requirements for Master and Ph.D. Programs
1. Application for Master Programs
Applicants for master's programs shall have a degree equivalent to a Chinese bachelor's degree and a certificate of HSK5 or above.
2. Application for Ph.D. Programs
Applicants for Ph.D. programs shall have a degree equivalent to a Chinese master's degree and a certificate of HSK5 or above.
3. Have passed IELTS (at or above 6 points) or TOEFL (at or above 75 points); required for ESL (English as a Second Language) students only.
II. Admission Plan
(I) Application for Undergraduate Programs
At present, 17 undergraduate programs are offered to international students at BSU. The undergraduate programs have a length of four years and are delivered in Chinese. A bachelor's degree and a graduation certificate will be conferred to those who have completed all the required courses and passed all the exams and the thesis defense.
(II) Application for Master Programs
As of 2021, 13 faculties are offered to international students at BSU. Their length is usually three years and the courses are delivered in Chinese. A master's degree and a graduation certificate will be conferred to those who have passed all required exams with satisfactory results and passed the thesis defense.
(III) Application for Ph.D. Programs
In 2021, seven doctoral programs are offered to international students at BSU. The length is usually four years and courses are delivered in Chinese. A doctor's degree and a graduation certificate will be conferred to those who have attended the required exams with satisfactory results and passed the thesis defense.

III. Application and Assessment
BSU offers online applications. Applicants should register at http://188.8.131.52/default.aspx within the given time to fill in the registration information and upload the application materials as required.
1. Materials for Application
Copy of first passport page and visa page; copies of HSK Certificate and Score Report; recent electronic photo (cap-free, 2-inch size, plain white background); IELTS or TOEFL score reports for ESL (English as a Second Language) students.
Applicants for undergraduate programs shall provide the following:
1) The transcripts of all senior high school courses in original or as a certified copy in Chinese or English;
2) The senior high school diploma (studying certificate issued by the senior high school for applicants graduating from senior high school in the current year) in original or as a certified copy in Chinese or English;
3) For applicants under 18, a notarized guardianship letter valid in China is required (The guardian of the student has to be living in Beijing at present and must have a source of income regardless their nationality is Chinese or not).
Applicants for master and Ph.D. programs shall provide the following:
1) Master applicants shall provide transcripts of all undergraduate courses in original or as a certified copy in Chinese or English;
2) Ph.D. applicants shall provide transcripts of all undergraduate and master's courses in original or as a certified copy in Chinese or English;
3) Research proposal. Master applicants shall submit a research proposal of no less than 800 Chinese characters, while Ph.D. applicants shall submit a research experience and research proposal of no less than 1,500 Chinese characters;
4) Copy of degree certificate (Those who have not graduated yet shall offer a certificate of expected graduation, and provide the copy of degree certificate after graduation) and academic transcript;
5) Two academic recommendation letters from associate professors or higher rankings;
2. Application Schedule:
The online application system is open from February 1 to June 1, 2021.
Note: Applicants for the Chinese Government Scholarship are required to apply at the website specified by China Scholarship Council, and the applicants for the Confucius Institute Scholarship are required to apply at the Confucius Institute.
BSU will review the application materials and organize video interviews with applicants who have passed the materials review in the middle of June 2021. An interview and assessment team for international undergraduate admission will be set up under the guidance of BSU’s student admission working group to be in charge of the interview and assessment of international students applying for undergraduate programs. Each school will set up such a team for admission of postgraduate program applicants to be in charge of the interview and assessment of international students applying for master's and Ph.D. programs. Students will be selected based on the interview results, and those who fail the interview will not be admitted.
During the assessment period, applicants can log into the BSU International Student Service System (http://184.108.40.206/default.aspx) to view application updates, progress, and relevant notices.
IV. Admission and Registration
Applicants who pass the materials review and the interview/assessments will be informed via email by early July.
BSU shall issue the “Admission Notice” and the form for “Visa Application for Study in China” (JW201/202 Form) and other relevant admission documents to admitted applicants. It usually takes 4-5 weeks to mail out the materials after the admission process is completed.
Please apply for an X1 or X2 Visa (study visa) at the Chinese Embassy (Consulate) with the BSU Admission Notice and the form for “Visa Application for Study in China” (JW202/201 Form).
New students should register in person at BSU within the time specified in the Admission Notice. When registering, students are required to present the Admission Notice, JW201/202 Form in original, passport, application materials in original, and four 2-inch certificate photos on white background. Those who already did a physical examination in their home country are required to provide the original medical examination records.
(III) Second Review
BSU will conduct a second review on the application materials after admission and is entitled to withdraw its decision of admission and disqualify any applicant in case of an unconformity between the applicant and their Admission Notice, student information, and other materials, or other violations such as fraud or committing irregularities.

VI. Scholarship Application
(I) Chinese Government Scholarship
China Scholarship Council, overseas embassies (consulates), and other relevant authorities will accept and handle the applications, submit the applicants’ information, consult with BSU for admission and give feedback on the admission information. (II) Confucius Institute Scholarship
Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) will organize the application and examination and consult with BSU to review and admit applicants approved by Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban). Please visit http://ccsp.chinese.cn/ for the detailed application process. The final admission results will be subject to the announcement of Hanban.
(III) Beijing Government Scholarship
Applicants shall apply to BSU for the scholarship after admission and will be evaluated according to BSU’s scholarship evaluation method after BSU receives and reviews the application materials.
(IV) BSU Belt and Road Scholarship
Applicants shall apply at BSU for the scholarship along with their application for the program and will be evaluated according to BSU’s scholarship evaluation method after BSU receives the application materials.

[About Visa Application]
Admitted students shall apply for a Chinese study visa at the Chinese Embassy using the Admission Notice and the form for “Visa Application for Study in China” (JW201/202 Form). Students who will study for more than 180 days shall apply for an X1 visa, and change it to a residence permit at BSU’s Office for International Exchange and Cooperation within 30 days upon arrival in China; students who will study for less than 180 days may apply for an X2 visa.
[About Medical Insurance]
China’s Ministry of Education stipulates that international students in China must purchase medical insurance during their stay in the territory of China. Students can purchase the medical insurance provided by Ping An Insurance at the Registration Office during the registration process. Students are unable to register without purchasing medical insurance as required.
