Visa and residence

According to Chinese law, foreign students who come to China should hold an ordinary visa (X1 or X2 visa) or residence permit to enter and study in China.

The International Student Affairs Office of the International College of Beihang University is the department in charge of Beihang International Student Visa/Residence Permit Affairs. If you have any questions about passports and visas, please directly consult the teacher in the International Student Affairs Office of the International College.

 

1. Applying for a residence permit for the first time

Foreign students holding a study visa X1 should apply for a residence permit within 30 days of entry. Otherwise, they will be illegally staying, and they will be responsible for their own responsibility and fines. The documents required to apply for a residence permit are:

  • My valid passport
  • A 2-inch (passport size) front face photo (with white background)
  • Copy of "Registration Form for Temporary Residence"
  • Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics "Admission Notice" and "Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Studying in China" (JW201 or JW202 Form)
  • "Health Certificate" issued by Beijing International Travel Health Care Center
  • "Notice of Visa Procedure for International Students" issued by the International Student Affairs Office of the International College
  • Tuition invoice within the period of application for residence
  •  
  • Applicants under the age of 18 must also provide the following materials:
  • The front and back of the Beijing guardian's ID card (copy)/Non-Beijing guardians also need to provide a full set of copies of the Beijing temporary residence permit/passport and visa pages of foreign guardians employed in China (copy)
  • Birth certificate (Chinese or English) (copy)
  • Parent's passport homepage (copy)

 

International students bring the above documents to the International Visa Service Office of the Chamber of Commerce (International College 404 Office) to go through the application procedures, pay the visa fee, receive the receipt and retrieve the passport according to the time specified on the receipt.

Within 24 hours after obtaining the residence permit, the international student must go to the international student dormitory, hotel, or the police station of the place of residence to re-apply for the "Registration Form for Temporary Residence" with a passport.

International students holding a residence permit can re-enter with the certificate after leaving the country (including Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan) within the period of residence, and no additional visa is required.

 

2. Application for extension of residence permit

If an international student holding a residence permit applies for an extension of the residence period due to continued study, they should apply for an extension of the residence permit at least 30 days before the expiration of the residence permit. The required documents are:

  • My valid passport
  • A 2-inch (passport size) front face photo (with white background)
  • Copy of "Registration Form for Temporary Residence"
  • "Notice of Visa Procedure for International Students" issued by the International Student Affairs Office of the International College
  • Tuition invoice within the period of application for residence

3. Apply for a visa extension

International students holding X2 visas for study should apply at least 15 days before the expiration of the visa period if they wish to extend their visa stay period or apply for an increase in the number of entries due to continuing their studies. The required documents are:

  • My valid passport
  • A 2-inch (passport size) front face photo (with white background)
  • Copy of "Registration Form for Temporary Residence"
  • Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics "Admission Notice" and "Visa Application Form for Foreign Students Studying in China" (JW201 or JW202 Form)
  • "Notice of Visa Procedure for International Students" issued by the International Student Affairs Office of the International College
  • Tuition invoice within the period of application for residence

Note: According to the "Exit and Entry Administration Law", the visa extension is valid only for this stay and does not affect the number of entries and the validity period of the entry, and the extension period does not exceed the original visa stay period.

 

4. Student family members apply for residence permit/visa extension

Foreign spouses, children under the age of 18, and parents of foreign students under the age of 18 who come to China to visit relatives or accompany students should apply for and hold a private affairs visa (S1 visa or S2 visa) to enter China.

Families of foreign students holding S1 visas should apply for residence permits within 30 days of entry. If family members of foreign students holding S2 visas apply for an extension of the visa stay period due to continued study, they should apply at least 15 days before the expiration of the visa period. The required documents are:

  • A valid ordinary passport of the student's family
  • Copy of the photo page, residence permit page, and entry stamp page of the student’s valid ordinary passport
  • Student family members A 2-inch (passport size) front face photo (with white background)
  • Family members Copy of "Registration Form for Temporary Residence"
  • A copy of the marriage certificate (needed by the foreign spouse) or the kinship certificate (needed by the foreign children) (Note: The relevant certificate issued by the foreign institution must be certified by the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad, if the original certification is in a non-Chinese or English version, The translation must be translated and stamped by the embassy or translation company)

5. Reissue a lost passport

After discovering that the passport is lost, international students should follow the steps below to complete the relevant procedures:

  • Immediately go to the public security branch or police station where the lost place is located to report the case and obtain a passport report certificate.
  • International students can apply for a new passport at the embassy of their country in China with the "Passport Loss Certificate".
  • Within 24 hours of obtaining a new passport, bring the new passport and the “Passport Loss Certificate” to re-apply for the Temporary Residence Registration Form, and apply for a new visa or residence permit at the International Student Affairs Office within 10 days.
  • Within 24 hours after the new visa or residence permit is processed, the international student himself/herself shall take the passport to the international student dormitory, hotel, or the police station of the place of residence to update the "Registration Form of Temporary Residence."

 

If an international student reissues a passport in China but fails to apply for a new residence permit within 10 days, it constitutes an illegal residence.

 

6. Passport renewal

International students who renew their passports in China due to their passport expiration or other reasons should apply for renewal two months before the expiration of their residence permit. After the passport is renewed, the residence permit should be changed within 10 days.

International students who renew their passports in their home country due to passport expiration and other reasons, if they hold a new passport and use the valid residence permit in the old passport to enter the country, they should apply for the change of residence permit within 10 days.

The required documents are:

  • I have an old passport with a valid residence permit and a new passport
  • A 2-inch (passport size) front face photo (with white background)
  • Copy of "Registration Form for Temporary Residence" issued according to the new passport information
  • "Notice of Visa Procedure for International Students" issued by the International Student Affairs Office of the International College
  • Tuition invoice within the period of application for residence

 

Within 24 hours after the residence permit is changed, the international student must go to the international student dormitory, hotel, or local police station to re-apply for the "Registration Form for Temporary Residence" with a passport.

If an international student renews his passport in China but fails to apply for a new residence permit within 10 days, it constitutes an illegal residence.

 

7. Change of residential address

If you move into a new address, the first thing you need to do is to register at the local police station. Secondly, you also need to bring the new "Registration Form for Temporary Accommodation" to the International Student Affairs Office of the International College within 10 days to apply for a change of the accommodation address on the visa.

 

8. Other matters needing attention

  • The validity period of visa and residence permit for foreign students in China shall not exceed the period of study.
  • When entering our school, international students who hold a visa or residence permit issued by another school in China must hold a certificate of end of study or transfer certificate issued by the above-mentioned school.
  • When applying for a visa or residence permit extension, international students must pay insurance premiums and tuition fees first, and apply for visa or residence permit extension within the time limit for the payment of insurance premiums and tuition fees.
  • After completing their studies, international students should leave the country before the expiration of their visa or residence permit, otherwise, they will constitute illegal residence.
  • When freshmen enter the school, if their visa or residence permit has expired or is about to expire, the school will not accept their registration and must go to the Exit-Entry Administration Bureau of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau to accept punishment.
  • Visa policies may change by national laws and regulations. The school implements various visa policies by the official notification from the Exit-Entry Administration of Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau.
