The Central Conservatory of Music was established in 1949 by the Administration of the Central People's Government. It was established in 1938 by the Yan'an Lu Xun Academy of Arts Music Department.

Chongqing National Conservatory of Music established in 1940, North China University established in 1948 and the three music departments of North China University established in 1918 The National Peking College of the Arts Music Department and other music education institutions merged to form an institution of higher learning that cultivates senior professional music talents.

In 1960, it was designated as a national key institution of higher learning by the State Council. In 2000, it was listed as a national "211 Project" construction institution. It is the only national key university among art schools in the country. In 2017. It was selected as a national "double first-class" discipline construction institution. There is now the Department of Composition, Department of Music, Department of Conducting, Department of Piano, Department of Orchestra, Department of Folk Music.
