China University of Petroleum (Beijing) has two campuses (Beijing, Karamay). The Beijing Changping campus is located at the southern foot of the scenic Jundu Mountain. The Beijing campus covers an area of more than 700 acres.

The Karamay campus is located in Karamay, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Covers an area of more than 7,000 acres. The school is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education with distinctive petroleum characteristics, engineering-oriented, and multi-disciplinary coordinated development. It is one of the universities with graduate schools. In 1997, the school first entered the ranks of the national "211 Project" construction universities; in 2006, it became the national "superior discipline innovation platform" project construction university.

In 2017, the school entered the ranks of national first-class discipline construction universities and fully embarked on a new journey of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics.

After more than sixty years of construction and development, the school has formed a discipline and professional layout with distinctive petroleum characteristics, focusing on engineering and coordinated development of multiple disciplines.

Key disciplines such as petroleum and petrochemical are in a leading position in China and have formed a certain influence internationally. According to the latest data from ESI, the school has 6 disciplines in the top 1% of the ESI ranking, namely chemistry, engineering, materials science, earth science, computer science, and environment/ecology.

Among them, engineering is among the top 1‰ of ESI in the world, and environment/ Ecology entered the top 1% of ESI in the world for the first time in January 2021. Focusing on the structure of the petroleum and petrochemical industry, we have established a distinctive petroleum discipline and professional layout consisting of petroleum and petrochemical main disciplines, supporting disciplines, basic disciplines, and emerging interdisciplinary disciplines, and implemented the "climbing plan", "upgrading plan" and "cultivation plan".

Respectively build advantageous petroleum and petrochemical disciplines such as oil and natural gas engineering, geological resources and geological engineering, basic supporting disciplines such as chemistry, materials science and engineering, and emerging interdisciplinary disciplines such as new energy, new materials, and artificial intelligence.

The school always regards the training of talents as its fundamental task, and adheres to the concept of “the quality of talent training is the lifeline of the school”. For more than half a century, the school has trained more than 200,000 outstanding professional talents for the country, laid a talent foundation for the development of the national petroleum and petrochemical industry, and is known as the "cradle of petroleum talents."

The school currently has 12,163 full-time undergraduates (3754 full-time undergraduates on the Karamay campus), 6,346 postgraduate students, 1,714 doctoral students, and 671 international students. The total number of students is more than 20,000. Graduates are generally welcomed by society and employers, and the employment rate of graduates continues to remain high.

The school insists on taking talents as the first resource, deeply implements the strategy of strengthening the school with talents, and has established a high-level faculty team.

There are 1,706 faculty members (230 faculty members on the Karamay campus), including 280 professors and 428 associate professors. Among them: 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 10 distinguished professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Award Program", 4 "Ten Thousand Talents Program" leading talents, 12 winners of the "National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars", and the National "973" 5 chief scientists of the project, 4 members of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 1 national-level teaching teacher, 2 young scholars in the "Changjiang Scholars Award Program", 3 top-notch young talents in the "Ten Thousand Talents Program", and "National Outstanding Youth" 11 winners of the Fund. There are 9 national candidates for the "Hundred, Thousand, Thousand, Thousand Talents Project" and 33 from the "New Century Excellent Talents Support Program" of the Ministry of Education. There are 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China's innovative research groups, 5 "High School Disciplinary Innovation and Talent Introduction Programs" (referred to as "111 Programs") by the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and the "Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program" of the Ministry of Education. There are 4 teams, 3 national-level teaching teams, and 6 outstanding teaching teams in Beijing.

In 2018, two achievements won the second prize of national teaching achievement in higher education. The school adheres to the combination of introduction and training and supports the rapid growth of outstanding young teachers through the selection of the young top talent plan and the young teacher growth project, and a group of outstanding young teachers stands out.

The school insists on taking scientific research as the road to a strong school and continuously improves its scientific and technological innovation ability and comprehensive scientific research level by the idea of “building a large platform, undertaking large projects, gathering large teams, achieving large results, and making large contributions”.

There are 2 national key laboratories, 9 national scientific research and innovation platform branches, 23 provincial and ministerial scientific research and innovation platforms, and 18 China National Petroleum Corporation key laboratory branches.

The research field of petroleum and petrochemistry has outstanding advantages, leading domestically in many research fields, and developing rapidly in emerging research fields such as unconventional oil and gas and new energy.

Since the "13th Five-Year Plan", the school has undertaken a total of 1467 national scientific research projects, and won 13 national three major science and technology awards, of which 5 were the first completed units; and won 283 provincial and ministerial and social science and technology awards Among them.

There are 173 items as the first completed unit. The number of national-level awards ranked 10th in the national university general projects in 2014 and 2015 and ranked 7th in the 2017 national university general projects.

The school adheres to the road of running a school that combines "government, industry, education, and research". In October 2013, the Ministry of Education and the five major petroleum companies signed an agreement to jointly build the University of Petroleum.

The school has successively signed comprehensive cooperation agreements with 144 provincial and municipal governments, enterprises, and institutions, and in particular has explored and established a new mechanism and model for the joint training of talents by industry, university, and research.

At present, nearly 76 petroleum and petrochemical companies have set up corporate scholarships and scholarships; 13 petroleum and petrochemical companies have established the Yucai Hall on campus.

Jointly recruited postdoctoral research stations with 40 corporate postdoctoral research stations; and set up graduate work stations or joint ventures in 202 petroleum and petrochemical companies Training base; student practice bases have been established in 103 companies.

Social practice bases have been established in 69 petroleum and petrochemical companies. Actively explore the cooperative education mechanism of government, industry, university, and research.

The school and Karamay City jointly established the Karamay Institute of Engineering and the Beijing Institute of Engineering with the three major petroleum companies in Beijing.

The school focuses on implementing the undergraduate excellence program and professional degree graduate training and has taken new steps in the field of higher engineering education.

The school attaches great importance to international exchanges and cooperation. Through the implementation of an international strategy, the field and scope of international exchanges and cooperation have been continuously expanded, and the international influence has been continuously expanded. The school has established a multi-level, multi-field, multi-channel exchange and cooperation relationship with more than 170 universities and many companies in developed countries such as the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan.

It has established 13 international joint research institutions with foreign universities or companies and established a Confucius Institute with the University of San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador.

In 2018, the school initiated the establishment of the World Energy University Alliance, the world energy university cooperation organization, with members including 31 energy universities from 17 countries including China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and France.

The school actively participates in the construction of the “Belt and Road” and has established cooperative relationships with more than 60 foreign universities, enterprises, and institutions along the “Belt and Road”.

In 2017, the school was selected as the "Belt and Road" scholarship program for foreign students in Beijing; was approved for the "Silk Road" Chinese Government Scholarship Program, and was selected as the first batch of Beijing "Belt and Road" national talent training base projects.

In 2019, it was the first batch of approved "China-Africa Friendship" scholarship program and "China-Africa Friendship" Chinese government scholarship training program for advanced students in the national Chinese government scholarship colleges and universities.
