The name of Fudan University is taken from the "日月光华,旦复旦兮" in "尚书大传". It was founded in 1905 and was originally named Fudan Public School. In 1917, it was named Fudan University. It was the first higher education institution independently founded by the Chinese. . The predecessor of Shanghai Medical University was the National Fourth Sun Yat-sen University School of Medicine founded in 1927. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University. At present, the school has 11 disciplines including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art; in 2017, the school was selected as a "double first-class" construction university list and established It has 27 "double first-class" construction disciplines, and it is a world-renowned and top comprehensive research university in China.


At present, Fudan University has 35 directly affiliated hospitals (departments) and 18 affiliated hospitals (4 of which are in preparation). The school has 79 undergraduate majors, 37 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 43 first-level discipline master degree authorization points (including first-level discipline doctorate authorization points), 4 doctoral professional degree authorization points, and master's professional degrees There are 32 authorized sites and 35 post-doctoral research stations. There are 13991 general undergraduate and junior college students, 22,232 postgraduates (including full-time and part-time mainland Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan students), and 2,946 foreign students with academic qualifications. There are 3139 teachings and research personnel in the school. There are 51 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including double appointments), 1 distinguished professor of liberal arts, 13 senior professors of liberal arts, 118 national outstanding youth science funds, and 301 national important young talents programs.


Ranked 40th in the world in the QS World University Rankings, Fudan University ranks 3rd among domestic universities. In terms of academic influence, Fudan has entered 19 subjects in the top 1% of ESI's world, ranking second in mainland China (tied). Among them, chemistry, materials science, clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology have entered the world1 ‰. In the QS World Ranking of Subjects, Fudan has 29 subjects ranked among the top 100 in the world, ranking third in China in total; all five university disciplines rank among the top 100 in the world, and only two universities in mainland China rank among this list. In the USNews World Subject Rankings, 4 subjects are among the top 50 in the world, and in THE Times Higher Education World Subject Rankings, one subject is among the top 50 in the world. In the fourth round of national first-level discipline assessment, 5 disciplines were rated as A+, and more than 60% of the participating disciplines were rated as A-type disciplines. In addition, 14 disciplines were selected for Shanghai's peak discipline construction.


The school has 5 national key laboratories, 1 national mathematics center, 1 national key research base for textbook construction, 2 national clinical medicine research centers, 1 national manufacturing innovation center, 7 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Education 14 key laboratories, 9 key laboratories of the Health Commission, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Health of the General Logistics Department, 15 Shanghai Key Laboratories, 11 Shanghai Engineering Research Centers; there are key humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education There are 10 research bases, the Chinese Research Institute was selected as the first batch of national high-end think tank construction pilot units, the School of Marxism was selected as the first batch of national key Marxist schools, and the secretariat of the "Chinese University Think Tank Forum" settled in Fudan.


In recent years, Fudan University has signed cooperation agreements with more than 270 universities and institutions in more than 40 countries and regions around the world. About 8,000 teachers and students go abroad every year, accept about 5,000 overseas visitors every year, and hold about 100 international conferences every year.


The school has four campuses in Handan, Fenglin, Zhangjiang, and Jiangwan, covering a total area of about 2,439,200 square meters and a building area of 2,241,100 square meters.
