Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the Guangdong Traditional Chinese Medicine School founded in 1924. In 1956, the Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established under the approval of the State Council. It was one of the first four higher undergraduate colleges of Chinese medicine in New China. In 1995, it was renamed Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Originally directly under the Ministry of Health, it was transferred to the Guangdong Provincial People's Government in 2000. In 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" discipline construction university. In 2018, it was promoted to a key construction university of high-level universities in Guangdong Province. In 2020, it will become a joint unit of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the Ministry of Education, and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school adheres to the university spirit of "Chongqing, Harmonious, Tolerant, Learning from the Past, and Refining Studies", and implements the fundamental task of cultivating people with morality.


There are two campuses in Sanyuanli and University Town, covering an area of 1355 acres and a building area of more than 780,000 square meters. There are 1530 full-time teachers, including 433 with senior professional titles and 478 with deputy senior titles. There are several famous experts and professors represented by masters of traditional Chinese medicine Xuan Guowei and Zhou Daihan. The school is among the first batch of colleges and universities to implement the "Pilot Reform of Educational Training Plan for Outstanding Doctors (Traditional Chinese Medicine)" determined by the Ministry of Education and to undertake the "Pilot Project for the Reform of Top-notch Innovative Talents in Traditional Chinese Medicine", and was selected as the second batch of demonstration colleges in the country to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Materia Medica are the first batches of first-class undergraduate professional construction sites in the country. "Emphasis on classics and strong clinical practice" is the most distinctive feature of the school's undergraduate teaching. In the mid-1980s, the school took the lead in launching the teaching reform of classics returning to clinical practice, implementing the management system of "integration of departments and schools" to promote the coordinated development of medical education. Degree and postgraduate education began in 1978. It is the first batch of universities in the country to be granted the right to grant doctorate and master's degrees. The scale and quality of degree and postgraduate education rank among the top universities in the country. The school has produced talents in large numbers and has trained a group of outstanding alumni such as Professor Liu Liang, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, who are all over the world.


The school's scientific research has obvious characteristics and outstanding advantages. The "Clinical and Experimental Research on Spleen Deficiency Myasthenia Gravis" by the team of Professor Deng Tietao, a master of Chinese medicine, won the 1992 National Science and Technology Progress Award; the lifetime professor Wang Jianhua's team of "Spleen Deficiency Syndrome Differentiation and Treatment Series Research" won the 2000 National Science and Technology Progress Award In 2016, his landmark achievement "Spleen Deficiency Theory and Its Application Research Inheritance and Innovation" were selected into the "Inheritance and Innovation Collection of Major Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine"; Professor Yuan Hao's team "Research on the Treatment of Femoral Head Necrosis by Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine" won 2000 The second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. As the main member unit, the school participated in the national "523" malaria prevention and control project, clinically confirmed the anti-malarial efficacy of artemisinin, and made a significant contribution to the invention of artemisinin. The series of research results of Professor Li Guoqiao's team have successively won the National Science Conference Award, the Second Prize of National Technological Invention, and the Second Prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award. The “Theoretical Innovation and Clinical Application of Acupuncture Treatment of Ischemic Stroke” project of Professor Xu Nenggui’s team won the second prize of the 2019 National Science and Technology Progress Award. The school focuses on building the International Institute of Translational Medicine of Chinese Medicine, South China Acupuncture Research Center, Innovative Chinese Medicine Research Public Service Platform, Basic Research Center of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Lingnan Medical Research Center, Guangdong Academy of Chinese Medicine (Guangdong Branch of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences), and technological innovation The center (Sanyuanli campus) and other key platforms have 55 scientific research platforms above the provincial and ministerial level.


The school has been cooperating with Southeast Asian countries and African countries to carry out anti-malarial research. The reorganization system sent a medical team to Ghana to perform medical assistance tasks. Undertaking the technical assistance project of the Comoros Anti-malarial Center of the Ministry of Commerce, the technical assistance project of Malaria Control in Sao Tome and Principe, and the construction project of Guangdong Province’s assistance to the Papua New Guinea Malaria Control Center. Based on its own advantages, the school actively participates in the construction of a strong province of Chinese medicine. There are 4 directly affiliated hospitals, 4 hospitals jointly built with the government, and 31 non-directly affiliated hospitals. The First and Second Affiliated Hospitals were selected into the "Climbing Plan" for the construction of high-level hospitals in Guangdong Province. The First Affiliated Hospital has become the first batch of innovative pilot units for the diagnosis and treatment of traditional Chinese medicine, and the second batch of "National TCM Clinical Research Base Construction Units". It is one of the hospitals with the most regional TCM (specialist) diagnosis and treatment centers in the country. During the "SARS" period in 2003, the affiliated hospital of our school, as the leader of the anti-SARS TCM expert group of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, advocated early intervention of Chinese medicine with outstanding clinical effects, which was recognized by experts from the World Health Organization. During the 2020 new crown pneumonia epidemic, our school experts, as members of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in response to the new crown pneumonia epidemic prevention and control work expert group, participated in the formulation of the first to seventh editions of the diagnosis and treatment plan of the National Health Commission and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. . The directly affiliated hospital of the school has sent 112 medical staff to assist Hubei; experts have been sent to Malaysia as the leader of the Chinese government's anti-epidemic medical expert group to assist in the development of epidemic prevention and control work.


The school actively promotes collaborative innovation and serves the local economy. Establish industry-university-research cooperation relationships with 15 cities inside and outside the province to help farmers get rid of poverty accurately and promote the revitalization of mountainous villages. The series of proprietary Chinese medicines such as Wei Naian, Guxian Tablets, Xiaoke Pills, Jinfo Pain Pills, Zishen Yutai Pills, and Hewei Pain Capsules developed by the school have become the core products of Guangdong pharmaceutical companies and sell well throughout the country. In the past three years, the school has vigorously developed the transfer of scientific and technological achievements and technology transfer, and the contract funds for the transfer of scientific and technological achievements have reached 50 million yuan. In the province, 50 standardized planting bases of traditional Chinese medicinal materials featuring "Southern Medicine" have been established, with a planting area of more than 1 million mu.


The school vigorously explores and promotes the culture of traditional Chinese medicine, shaping the unique humanistic environment of the industry. The Guangdong Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine built by the school is the first batch of national second-level museums in universities across the country. Together with the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital, it has been identified as the first batch of national Chinese medicine culture propaganda and education bases by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has become Guangdong Communication An important window of Chinese medicine culture.


The school gives full play to its geographical and cultural advantages, and actively serves the national "One Belt One Road" initiative and the development strategy of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Since enrolling foreign students in 1974, it has trained more than 20,000 senior TCM talents in more than 110 countries and regions. It has established the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao University TCM Alliance with universities in Hong Kong and Macau and established 7 in Australia and other countries and regions. There are two overseas centers of traditional Chinese medicine and three international cooperation bases of traditional Chinese medicine. The school and affiliated hospitals and internationally renowned universities jointly build joint laboratories and research bases, jointly set up distinctive brand courses, carry out exchange programs, conduct in-depth cooperative research in the field of Chinese medicine, and jointly establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
