Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the Guangdong Traditional Chinese Medicine School founded in 1924. In 1956, the Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established under the approval of the State Council. It was one of the first four higher undergraduate colleges of Chinese medicine in New China. In 1995, it was renamed Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. Originally directly under the Ministry of Health, it was transferred to the Guangdong Provincial People's Government in 2000. In 2017, it was selected as a national "double first-class" discipline construction university. In 2018, it was promoted to a key construction university of high-level universities in Guangdong Province. In 2020, it will become a joint unit of the People's Government of Guangdong Province, the Ministry of Education, and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school is among the first batch of colleges and universities to implement the "Pilot Reform of Educational Training Plan for Outstanding Doctors (Traditional Chinese Medicine)" determined by the Ministry of Education and to undertake the "Pilot Project for the Reform of Top-notch Innovative Talents in Traditional Chinese Medicine", and was selected as the second batch of demonstration colleges in the country to deepen the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education.
