Affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, it focuses on science and engineering, and has coordinated development of science and engineering, management, literature, economics, law and other disciplines. It has three campuses in Harbin, Weihai, and Shenzhen.
The school was founded in 1920. In 1951, it was identified as one of the two model universities in the country to learn from foreign higher education models. In 1954, it entered the ranks of the country's first six key universities and was once known as the cradle of engineers.
The school entered the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities in 1996. In 1999, it was identified as one of the first batch of national "985 Project" key construction universities. In 2000, it merged with Harbin Jianzhu University of the same origin to form a new university. Harbin Institute of Technology in 2017 was selected into the list of "Double First-Class" Construction A-type colleges and universities.
