Established in 1952, Inner Mongolia Normal University is the first institution of higher learning established by the Party and the state in border ethnic minority areas after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. It is also a key university in the autonomous region. It is a comprehensive normal university with distinctive characteristics of teacher education and ethnic education. After several generations of hard work and practical exploration, it has become an important base for the autonomous region to train basic education, ethnic education teachers, and Mongolian-Chinese ethnic minority compound talents. It is the autonomous region’s middle school teacher training center, primary and secondary school teacher continuing education center, Basic Education, and National Education Reform and Development Research Center. The school is also a national and autonomous region environment and sustainable development education training base, a national social sports instructor training base, an autonomous region ethnic sculpture research center, a professional art creation base, a humanities and social science popularization base, and a variety of sports professionals in the autonomous region and eight provinces across the country. The district Mongolian sports talents, ethnic music talents in northern China, art and art design education talent training bases in the autonomous region are known as the "cradle of ethnic education" by the society.

The library has more than 2.68 million books and more than 1.85 million e-books. The school has 27 teaching institutions, 3 cooperative schools, and 4 affiliated schools (including the Second High School Affiliated to Inner Mongolia Normal University and the Second Affiliated School of Inner Mongolia Normal University). In the 69 years since the school was founded, the school has formed the school philosophy of "seeking truth and being pragmatic, educating people first, academic innovation, and serving the society", and has strengthened the school-running characteristics of "dual-degree teacher education and Mongolian-Chinese training", adhering to the "dedication, The school motto of "seeking truth, unity, and forging ahead" has trained and transported more than 270,000 graduates of various types. The school insists on opening up schools and cooperates with more than 20 countries including Mongolia, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, and more than 80 domestic well-known universities, scientific research institutions, enterprises, and institutions. The local government has established a good cooperative relationship; in 2009, it was approved as a training unit for a master's degree in Chinese to international education. The school has successively hired nearly 500 famous domestic and foreign experts and scholars, including 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Sciences and 5 academicians, as academic advisors, visiting professors, and part-time professors.
