North China Electric Power University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, and a key construction university of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform".

In 2017, the school entered the ranks of the national "double first-class" construction university, focusing on the construction of the energy and electric power science and engineering discipline group, fully embarking on a new journey of building a world-class discipline and a high-level research university.

The school was founded in Beijing in 1958 and was formerly known as Beijing Electric Power University.

The school has long been under the management of the national power department.

In 2003, the school was transferred to the Ministry of Education and is now managed by the State Grid Corporation of China, China Southern Power Grid Corporation of China, China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd., China Datang Group Co., Ltd., China Huadian Group Co., Ltd., National Energy Investment Group Co., Ltd., State Power Investment Group Co., Ltd., China Three Gorges Group Co., Ltd., China General Nuclear Power Group Co., Ltd., China Power Construction Group Co., Ltd., China Energy Construction Group Co., Ltd.

The school has the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the School of Energy Power and Mechanical Engineering, the School of Control and Computer Engineering, the School of Economics and Management, the School of New Energy, the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering, the School of Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, and the School of Mathematics and Physics.

It has 2 national-level key disciplines, "Power System and Automation" and "Thermal Energy Engineering", and 25 provincial and ministerial key disciplines.
