Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology is a national "double first-class" construction university and a key support university in Jiangsu's high-level university construction. Born to serve the needs of the new China's national strategy and national economic construction, Nanjing University Meteorological College (predecessor of the school) was established in 1960, under the Central (Military Commission) Meteorological Bureau, formerly known as the Nanjing University Meteorological College, and independently established as Nanjing Meteorological College in 1963 In 1978, it was listed as a national key university. In 2000, it was renamed as in charge of Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. In 2004, it was renamed Nanjing University of Information Technology. Since 2007, the school has been jointly constructed by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, the China Meteorological Administration, the Ministry of Education, and the State Oceanic Administration. It is now a university jointly established by the central and local governments mainly managed by Jiangsu Province.

 

The main campus of the school is located in Jiangbei New District, Nanjing, covering an area of more than 2,000 acres; the Wuxi campus is located in Xidong New Town, Wuxi City, with Binjiang College (now converted to Wuxi College) and Nanxin University Wuxi Graduate School and Wuxi Research Institute. The school has distinctive characteristics. Atmospheric science has been selected as a national "world-class discipline" construction discipline. It has been rated as the first and A+ level in the country in the past two first-level discipline evaluations by the Ministry of Education.
