1. School History

Northwest Normal University is a key university jointly established by the People's Government of Gansu Province and the Ministry of Education. Its predecessor was the National Peking Normal University. It started from the Peking Normal University Teachers Hall established in 1902. In 1912, it was changed to "National Beijing Higher Normal School" and in 1923 to "National Peking Normal University". After the July 7th Incident in 1937, the National Peking Normal University and the National Peking University, and the Beiyang Institute of Technology, which moved westward at the same time, formed Northwest United University. The National Peking Normal University was reorganized as the College of Education under Northwest United University. Normal university. In 1939, the Teachers College of Northwest Associated University was established independently and renamed the National Northwest Normal College. In 1941, it moved to Lanzhou. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, the National Northwest Normal College continued to run schools in Lanzhou. At the same time, the Peking Normal University (now Beijing Normal University) was restored. One of the 1958 schools under the Ministry of National Education focused on six normal universities in 1958 under the leadership of Gansu Province, Gansu Normal University was renamed. In 1981, it was renamed Northwest Normal University. In 1988, it was renamed Northwest Normal University. In 2020, it will be listed as a provincial university supported by the Gansu Provincial People's Government to enter the ranks of national first-class university construction.

 

2. Institution Setting

In 1985, the Ministry of Education relied on the school to establish the "Northwest Minority Teacher Training Center" directly under the Ministry of Education and organized by colleges and universities, and implemented a two-in-one management system with the school "two brands, one team". In 1987, the State Council established the "Tibetan Teacher Training Center" in the school. In 2012, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council relied on the school to establish the "Northwest Normal University Chinese Education Base". 3. School conditions

The school has good conditions for running a school. The main campus covers an area of 960 acres, the new campus covers an area of 541.8 acres, and the ecological training base covers an area of 2272.5 acres. The total planned building area of the school is 1.005 million square meters, including 307,000 square meters of various teaching and auxiliary buildings. The total value of various teaching and research instruments and equipment is 422.1925 million yuan, and there are more than 1.858 million volumes of various literature resources. The school has built a modern public education service network system with distance education, comprehensive educational administration management, campus computer network, communication network, and cable television network as the main body.

 

4. Talent development

Since the school was set up independently, it has trained more than 260,000 students of various types. The school recruits students from 31 provinces (municipalities, autonomous regions) across the country, and currently has 36064 students of various types. Among them, 17389 undergraduates, doctoral graduate students 573 people, graduate 8697 people, 366 students, continuing education students in 9039 people. The undergraduate teaching reform project has been implemented for six consecutive periods. In 2003, the Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching level evaluation was excellent; in 2008, the Ministry of Education's English undergraduate professional evaluation was excellent. In 2010, it was rated as an advanced unit of national school art education.

 

5. Teachers

The school has a team of teachers with reasonable structure and excellent quality. There are 2272 faculty members, 347 persons with senior titles, 793 persons with deputy senior titles, 822 persons with doctoral degrees, and 915 persons with master's degrees. Among them, there are 1,528 full-time teachers, 325 professors (researchers), and 632 associate professors (associate researchers). There are 182 doctoral tutors (including 29 off-campus part-time tutors), and 1,506 master tutors (including 654 off-campus part-time tutors). 67 national-level talent title winners and projects were selected, and 184 provincial-level talent title winners and projects were selected. 6. Major

The school is one of the first units approved by the State Council to have the power to confer bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees. There are 79 general undergraduate majors (including 9 national-level characteristic majors; 22 national-level first-class undergraduate majors; 17 provincial-level first-rate undergraduate majors). 7. Scientific Research

The school has strong scientific research capabilities and has always attached importance to the integration of production, teaching, and research. In recent years, social sciences have outstanding advantages and distinctive characteristics in the fields of ancient Chinese literature, northwest history and geography, curriculum and teaching theory, ethnic education, ancient book collation, and Dunhuang studies. Natural science has in-depth research in the fields of polymer chemistry and physics, basic mathematics, atomic and molecular physics, and educational technology. The number and quality of basic theoretical research results have been steadily improved by SCIE, and the number of accepted papers ranks about 10 in the national normal universities. 8. Global cooperation

The school focuses on international cooperation and exchanges, and actively promotes international development strategies. With the United States Middle Tennessee State University, the United States Southern Illinois State University, the U.S. University of Khartoum, the University of Khartoum in Sudan, the U.K. Hooverhamton University, the Belarusian National Normal University, the University of Auckland in New Zealand, the University of Malaya in Malaysia, the University of Hong Kong, Tsinghua University in Taiwan and other foreign countries and Universities in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan have established long-term and stable strategic cooperative relations, signed academic cooperation and exchange agreements with more than 70 overseas scientific research institutions, and carried out substantive cooperation in student joint training, teacher exchange visits, and scientific research. At present, the school has established Confucius Institutes in cooperation with the University of Khartoum, Sudan, Free International University of Moldova, and Sarajevo University of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

 

9. Affiliated School

The school has an affiliated middle school, second affiliated middle school, affiliated primary school, and kindergarten, all of which are model schools in Gansu Province and Lanzhou City.
