The Ocean University of China is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education with distinctive marine and aquatic disciplines and a complete range of disciplines. It is a key university under the national "985 Project" and "211 Project". It was selected as a national "World-Class" in September 2017. University building colleges and universities" (Class A).

Founded in 1924, the school developed into Shandong Ocean University in 1959 after the private Qingdao University, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University, etc., and was designated as one of the 13 key comprehensive universities in the country in 1960. In 1988, it was renamed Qingdao Ocean University, and in 2002, it was renamed Ocean University of China.

 

The school has three campuses: Laoshan Campus, Yushan Campus, and Fushan Campus, covering an area of more than 2,400 acres. The West Coast Campus is under construction. There are 21 colleges and 1 basic teaching center. There are more than 27,000 full-time students, including more than 15,000 undergraduates, more than 9,000 postgraduates, more than 2,000 doctoral students, and more than 700 foreign students. There are 3698 faculty members, including 1884 full-time teachers, 505 doctoral supervisors, 693 senior professional, and technical personnel, 892 associate senior professional and technical personnel, 7 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and 9 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The famous writer Wang Meng served as the school consultant and the honorary dean of the School of Literature and Journalism. The former director of the State Oceanic Administration Wang Shuguang was appointed as the school consultant and the honorary dean of the Institute of Ocean Development. , Dean of Xingyuan Academy, Nobel Prize winner Mo Yan and other 14 well-known writers were hired as the school's "Author in Residence".

 

The school aims to cultivate high-quality innovative talents with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical education, art and labor, national spirit and social responsibility, international vision and sense of cooperation and competition, scientific spirit and humanistic quality, innovative consciousness, and practical ability. Leading talents and backbone forces in the national ocean industry are a special mission. The school follows the undergraduate education philosophy of "general knowledge as the body, professional for use", implements a limited-condition autonomous course selection system and a system of academic recognition and graduation major recognition and confirmation, and strives to cultivate compound and high-quality talents. Fourteen of the graduates have been elected academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and three have successively served as directors of the State Oceanic Administration. More than half of the 75 scientists who participated in China's first Antarctic expedition were school graduates.

 

The school has 3 scientific investigation and practice ships, including the 5000-ton new deep-sea comprehensive scientific research practice ship "Dongfanghong 3", the 3000-ton marine comprehensive scientific investigation practice ship "Dongfanghong 2", and the 300-ton "Angel 1" The transportation supply ship for scientific research has formed a maritime integrated mobile laboratory system that radiates from nearshore, offshore to deep sea and radiates to the polar regions, and has first-class offshore on-site observation capabilities. The school is the main support unit of Qingdao Marine Science and Technology Pilot National Laboratory, presides over the work of two functional laboratories, "Marine Dynamics Process and Climate" and "Marine Medicine and Biological Products", and participates in the other 6 functional laboratories as a backbone force. The school’s development goals are: by 2020, basically, build an internationally renowned and distinctive high-level research university; by 2030, build a world-class comprehensive ocean university; by the middle of this century, build a world-class university with distinctive characteristics.
