1. General Information

1.1 Overview of Sichuan University

Sichuan University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, which was established through a "merger" of the former Sichuan University (1896), the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology (1954), and the former West China University of Medical Sciences (1910). It is also a high-level research-oriented comprehensive university with a national priority of construction in western China.

Sichuan University consists of 35 colleges and schools with a comprehensive range of disciplines covering 12 categories: humanities, science, engineering, medicine, economy, management, law, history, philosophy, agriculture, education, and art. A total of 47 disciplines have been authorized by the state to grant doctoral degrees. Altogether, the university offers 38 professional degree programs, 37 post-doctoral research stations, 46 national key disciplines, 4 national key cultivated disciplines, and 45 national key clinical specialties. It’s listed in the first batch of national engineering doctoral training units. Today, the university has more than 37,000 ordinary undergraduate students, more than 28,000 master and doctoral students, and nearly 4,500 international students from foreign countries as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

Sichuan University takes pride in its large pool of faculty members and its strong strength in research and development. By the end of 2019, there were 4,527 full-time teachers and 16 academicians with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. Now it has 1 national key sci-tech facility, 4 key national laboratories, 2 national engineering technology research centers, 1 national center for applied mathematics, 2 national clinic medic research center, 1 national engineering laboratory, 3 national-regional joint engineering laboratories, 1 national-regional joint engineering research center, 5 national international sci-tech cooperation bases, 1 national key defense discipline laboratory, 1 frontier science center of the Ministry of Education, 10 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 7 engineering research centers, 2 key laboratories of the National Health Commission, 52 key laboratories, engineering centers and scientific research bases of Sichuan Province, 1 national high-end Think Tank cultivation unit, 4 humanities, and social sciences key research bases under the Ministry of Education.

Sichuan University insists on opening up and continuously promotes international exchanges and cooperation. At the moment, it has established an exchange and cooperation relationship with 306 internationally renowned universities and research institutions in 38 countries/regions, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.

1.3 Introduction to School of Overseas Education, SCU

Sichuan University (The School of Overseas Education), is an important base for the education of international students with a focus on Chinese language teaching. On top of our list of priorities includes the building of a school featuring first-class teaching levels, showcasing the rich characteristics of western China, and being the preferred institution of outstanding global students for learning Mandarin and Chinese culture. Relying on the long-standing history and comprehensive strength of Sichuan University in pursuit of promoting the teaching of the Chinese language globally, efforts are made from all aspects to improve the teaching quality, scientific research level, and discipline construction. In a move to build itself into a transmission base of culture featured the Chinese language with first-class teaching level, excellent teaching faculty, and good reputation both at home and abroad, we continue and maintain playing an exemplary role in West China. Through closer interactions, the School is committed to promoting mutual understanding among students from different countries and helping them shape a global horizon and lofty aspiration of contributing wisdom, strength, and peace to the development of mankind.

 

2. Education System and Academic Term

4 years for undergraduates, 2 or 3 years for postgraduates, and 3 years generally for doctoral candidates (depending on the majors). Applications can be submitted for deferment of graduation according to academic completion. At Sichuan University, each academic term is divided into two semesters. The autumn semester is the beginning of each term, starting from September to next January. Our spring semester starts from March all the way to July. For each term, there are two holidays -- winter holiday and summer holiday. Typically, the summer holiday lasts for about 7 weeks. The relatively shorter winter holiday lasts for about 4 weeks and generally covers the Spring Festival (refer to the lunar calendar). For the specific opening date, please abide by the academic calendar of the current year.

 

3. Application Procedures

3.1 When to Apply

Any applicant wishing to enroll for long-term or short-term study at Sichuan University should apply three months before the start of the desired semester.

 

3.2 How to Apply

(1) In case of an application for a Chinese Government Scholarship, you are required to log in on the website (www.csc.edu.cn) of the China Scholarship Council within the specified application time. Application procedures will be provided thereon. After applying, you are required to log in on the following website (http://www.sculx.cn/) of the Student Recruitment of Sichuan University and file the reapplication. Otherwise, you will not be admitted.

(2) Other applicants NOT about the Chinese Government Scholarship are required to log in to our website (http://www.sculx.cn/) of the Student Recruitment of Sichuan University within the specified application time.

Please be sure to check your email inbox (including the junk mailbox) regularly, and avoid missing a notice requiring addition or correction to your application information/material/document(s). The application may be rejected in case of any incomplete or inaccurate information based on the materials submitted.

 

3.3 Review 

(1) All of the applicants' materials applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship will be reviewed by the CSC and Sichuan University.

(2) Self-supporting applicants’ application materials will solely be reviewed by Sichuan University.

 

3.4 Admission

Applicants who are successfully accepted to start their semester with us will receive the Admission Letter for International Students of Sichuan University and JW201 (student with scholarship)/JW202 form (self-supporting student) and take the Admission Letter and the form above-mentioned to obtain the Visa for Study in China (X1 or X2) from Chinese embassy (consulate).

 

3.5 Registration

The applicants must come to the school for registration at the given time, taking the Admission Letter for International Students of Sichuan University  (hardcopy), JW201 (student with scholarship)/JW202 form (self-supporting student), and other relevant materials.

4. Medical Insurance

The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China stipulates that international students in China must cover the costs of medical insurance. Students may procure themselves medical insurance from Ping An Insurance(Group)Company of China, Ltd on the date of registration. For any student who fails to cover the cost of the required medical insurance, his/their registration will not be accepted.
