Remote Chinese teaching



Affected by the global spread of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, it is difficult for international Chinese teachers and volunteers to dispatch overseas.

To support the normal teaching work of the Confucius Institute under the epidemic, the Confucius Institute at Shanghai International Studies University will officially launch the remote Chinese teaching project in 2020.

As of the end of 2020, the Confucius Institute Office has provided 48 classes of Chinese language teaching for 4 overseas joint Confucius Institutes.

The annual enrollment of many Confucius Institutes has reached a record high, and the teaching results have been highly recognized by the Sino-foreign Language Exchange Cooperation Center. In December 2020, at the invitation of the Language Cooperation Center.

The Work Office of the Confucius Institute at SISU hosted the “Support and Cultivation of Remote Chinese Teaching Teachers” online forum, which attracted more than 600 remote Chinese education experts and scholars from home and abroad to participate online.

In 2021, a new round of online courses has begun. The Confucius Institute's office will continue to provide remote Chinese teaching support for the Confucius Institute in Shanghai and foreign countries from various aspects such as teachers, technology, and teaching resources to ensure that the Confucius Institute is not "class shortage". Unabated enthusiasm for learning.


Recruitment is strictly controlled

The Office of the Confucius Institute will start the recruitment of online teaching staff for this year from January 2021 and will conduct targeted selection based on the country where the Confucius Institute is located, teaching needs, and teaching targets.

The Office of the Confucius Institute and the Confucius Institute overseas organized a total of 7 interviews. After various levels of selection, as of March 15, 2021, a total of 26 new teachers have been recruited, including teachers from Shanghai and abroad, teachers sent by the returnees, and volunteers for return. The structure of remote Chinese teaching teachers has been further optimized.

The Office of the Confucius Institute helps online teachers apply for classrooms on campus, providing a quiet teaching environment for online classrooms, ensuring that teachers are not disturbed and can teach with peace of mind.




3. Provide abundant teaching resources

The construction of digital courses and multilingual video resources of the Confucius Institute Office has been continuously improved, providing powerful resource support for remote Chinese teaching.


Digital Course

The series of Chinese learning video courses "Take You to the "Magic City" created by the Confucius Institute Office lasted six months, starting with practical dialogues in various aspects such as clothing, food, housing, transportation, and using visual scenes to make remote Chinese teaching more vivid and three-dimensional.

The "Magic City-Walking Shanghai" series of cultural video courses integrate Shanghai's regional characteristics, showing the ancient and modern Shanghai-style from the perspectives of food, beauty, and humanities.




Multilingual cultural videos

The "Confucius Institute and I Talking about the Spring Festival" series of multilingual cultural videos feature introductions to the Chinese New Year, helping students to understand the Spring Festival culture more intuitively and comprehensively.

The live course of the "Chinese Bridge" online group exchange program leads students to travel to Shanghai in the cloud using live shooting so that students can experience the atmosphere of the "Magic City" as if they were on the scene.

In addition, the Office of the Confucius Institute worked with the Shanghai International Arts Troupe to provide overseas Confucius Institutes with a series of videos of Chinese folk dance and folk music.

Showing the charm of traditional Chinese dances and musical instruments to the students of the Confucius Institute, and through the explanation of dance movements and Chinese musical instruments. Further, enhance students' interest in understanding Chinese culture.

While ensuring the high-quality development of online courses, the Confucius Institute Office also attaches great importance to the professional development of teachers.

The work office regularly organizes teaching work meetings to encourage teachers to share teaching experience and skills and enhance teachers' teaching abilities.

In addition, the work office uses the remote Chinese teaching group to share resources such as academic lectures, international conferences, teaching courseware, and publishes a series of special articles on "Distance Chinese Education" through the WeChat public account, deepening teachers' understanding of remote Chinese education and improving teachers' Professional and academic literacy.




Orderly teaching

Since the launch of the long-distance Chinese teaching project, various Confucius Institutes have actively cooperated and participated in it. At present, various teaching tasks are being carried out in an orderly manner.

This year, overseas Confucius Institutes' demand for remote Chinese teaching has increased significantly. The number of Confucius Institutes conducting remote Chinese teaching has expanded from 4 in 2020 to 8, and the number of classes opened to more than 50, with more than 600 students. There are more than 245 class hours, and the online courses are non-stop from Monday to Sunday, 7 am to 11 pm.

The courses are rich in types, including HSK Chinese courses in the Confucius Institute, optional Chinese courses in elementary and middle schools, and oral Chinese tutoring courses, etc., to maximize the teaching needs of the Confucius Institute.

During the Spring Festival, in order not to affect the teaching progress of the Confucius Institute, the online teaching staff sacrificed their holidays and turned the joy of celebrating the Spring Festival into a passion for knowledge transmission, and spent a "non-closing" New Year with overseas Confucius Institute students.

In addition to teaching Chinese, the teachers also carefully prepared cultural activities, such as teaching students origami online, which not only incorporates Spring Festival elements but also entertains and educates, making the classroom more lively and full.

The rapid development of distance Chinese teaching under the new situation has provided "energy" to Chinese teaching in overseas Confucius Institutes promptly.

In the future, by the actual needs of the Confucius Institute, the Confucius Institute Office will continue to deepen remote Chinese teaching, optimize the quality of teaching, and serve the development of the Confucius Institute.
