Shanghai International Studies University, SISU was founded in December 1949. It is the first higher foreign language institution established after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is one of the birthplaces of foreign language education in New China. It is directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly established with Shanghai. Entered into the national key university of "211 Project" and "Double First-Class" construction.

 

SISU adheres to the school motto of "High-level ambitions, academic excellence at home and abroad" and the school-running philosophy of "interpreting the world and achieving the future", and runs the school with "serving the development of the country, the all-round growth of people, the progress of the society, and the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries". Historical heritage

Shanghai International Studies University is the same age as New China. Its predecessor was the Shanghai Russian School attached to the East China People's Revolutionary University. The first president was Jiang Chunfang, a famous Russian translator, publisher, and founder of the Chinese Encyclopedia business. After passing through the inheritance and reformation of the foreign language school attached to the East China People's Revolutionary University, the Shanghai Russian Language School, and the Shanghai International Studies University, it was listed as a national key university of the Ministry of Education in 1963. Approved by the Ministry of Education in 1985, the English school name of the school was determined as "Shanghai International Studies University" (abbreviated as "SISU"), and was officially renamed "Shanghai International Studies University" in 1994.

At present, SISU has fully formed a disciplined pattern with its expertise in language and literature disciplines, and coordinated development of literature, education, economics, management, law and other disciplines. SISU is a university that has signed the United Nations Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation and a member of the International Federation of Universities and Colleges of Translation (CIUTI). The talent training system of SISU is complete. International perspective

Shanghai International Studies University is one of the first universities in New China to carry out foreign exchanges. At the beginning of the establishment of the school, foreign experts were working in the school. SISU regards international education as its core development strategy. It has established cooperative relations with nearly 440 universities, cultural, educational and scientific research institutions and international organizations in 62 countries and regions. The universities that have signed the cooperation framework agreement with the Committee and the European Parliament have successively joined international academic alliances such as the International Alliance for Asian-African Studies, the Sino-British Higher Education Humanities Alliance, the Sino-Russian Comprehensive University Alliance, and the Sino-Japanese Humanities Exchange University Alliance.

 

SISU encourages young students to look around the world, grow up in a multicultural environment, and fully absorb the outstanding achievements and advanced experience of world higher education. The proportion of undergraduates going abroad (overseas) to study abroad is as high as 45% (2018). As one of the largest and most authoritative foreign language publishing bases in China, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press (Foreign Education Press) is a national first-level publishing house. SISU is a special project of the Ministry of Education for university network culture construction and the first batch of pilot units of education and media integration. In 2014, it was the first to open a multilingual foreign language portal group among universities across the country to tell Chinese stories in multiple languages, use the Internet to spread Chinese voices, and create innovative constructions.
