Shantou University is a comprehensive university in Guangdong Province established with the approval of the State Council in 1981. It is a provincial-ministerial university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province, and the Li Ka-Shing Foundation. It is also the only private foundation in the world-Li Ka-Shing. A public university continuously funded by the foundation. The school covers an area of 1990.20 acres, with a construction area of 570,100 square meters.

 

The school has received cordial care and strong support from the central and local governments since its establishment. In 2011, Shantou University was listed as a pilot unit for the comprehensive reform of self-sponsored education in Guangdong Province. Since 2012, the Ministry of Education, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province, and the Li Ka-Shing Foundation have jointly established Shantou University; in 2015, Shantou University has entered a high-level university in Guangdong Province. The construction of key disciplines projects ranks; In 2016, the Guangdong Technion-Israel Institute of Technology co-founded by Shantou University and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology was formally established with the approval of the Ministry of Education and enrolled for the first time in 2017. In November 2018, the school was approved as the first experimental demonstration school of the higher education system and mechanism reform in Guangdong Province.

 

The construction and development of the school have been supported by the famous patriot and international entrepreneur Mr. Li Ka-shing. The Li Ka-Shing Foundation has supported Shantou University with more than 10 billion Hong Kong dollars and has supported the school to carry out several educational reforms in terms of talents and resources.

The school has established several scientific research institutions that can not only carry out basic scientific research but also directly serve local economic construction, including the key laboratory of intelligent manufacturing technology of the Ministry of Education, the key laboratory of marine biotechnology, and the key experiment of digital signal and image processing technology. The school has five affiliated hospitals, one dental clinic, and five trusting hospitals, with a total of 6610 beds. The school focuses on the education goal of "ambition, knowledge, perseverance, and promising", adhere to student-oriented, and continues to reform the university management system and innovate talent training models.
