Chinese Teacher Scholarship


To meet the international community's increasing demand for Chinese language education talents, promote the development of Chinese language education around the world, and help the growth of international Chinese language education talents, the Ministry of Education's Sino-foreign Language Exchange Cooperation Center (hereinafter referred to as the Center) has established an international Chinese teacher scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Center) Referred to as scholarship), focusing on training qualified overseas Chinese teachers. Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, some Chinese test sites, relevant foreign educational institutions, Chinese teachers majors in universities/Chinese faculties, relevant foreign Chinese teaching industry organizations, Chinese embassies (consulates), etc. (hereinafter referred to as recommended institutions) Excellent students and in-service Chinese teachers can be recommended to Tongji University to study and further study Chinese international education and related majors.


Tongji University is located in Shanghai, China, and is one of the key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China. Application conditions

1. Non-Chinese nationals;

2. Physical and mental health, good character, and learning;

3. Aspiring to engage in Chinese education, teaching, and related work;

4. The age is 18-35 years old (unified on September 1, 2021). In-service Chinese teachers are relaxed to 45 years old, and applicants for undergraduate scholarships are generally under 25 years old.

5. A referral institution is required when applying.


Scholarship categories and application conditions

Master of Chinese Language Education

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 2 years.

Have a university degree. A minimum score of 210 in HSK (Level 5) and 60 in HSKK (Intermediate) are required in the Chinese test. Those who provide a work agreement or relevant certification for the teaching institution to be taught after graduation is preferred.

First-year trainee

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 11 months. International students in China will not be admitted.

In the direction of Chinese language and literature, with a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK (Intermediate Level).

For the direction of Chinese language study, with a score of 210 in the HSK test (Level 3), those who provide HSKK scores are preferred.

One semester trainee

Enrollment in September 2021 and March 2022, the funding period is 5 months. Those who have X1 and X2 visas in their passports are not admitted. In the direction of Chinese language and literature, with a minimum score of 180 in the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK score.


Funding content and standards

The Confucius Institute Scholarship includes tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance.

The tuition fee is coordinated by the receiving institution for the cultivation and management of scholarship students, cultural activities, and organizing the participation of Chinese tests. The tuition fee does not include teaching materials and entrance fees to tourist attractions.

Living expenses are paid by the school every month. The standard for one-year and one-semester research students is 2500 RMB/month; for master students majoring in International Chinese Language Education, it is 3000 RMB/month.

Scholarship students will enter the journal at the time specified in the acceptance letter of the receiving institution, otherwise, the scholarship qualification will be canceled. Those who register before the 15th (including the 15th) of the month will receive the full living allowance of the month; those who register after the 15th will receive a half-month living allowance of the month.

Scholarship students who leave China for more than 15 days due to personal reasons during their studies (excluding winter and summer vacations) will not be paid for their living expenses during their absence.

Scholarship students who suspend or drop out of school due to personal reasons, or receive disciplinary sanctions from the host institution, will be suspended from the payment of living expenses from the date of suspension, withdrawal, or receiving notice of sanctions.

The living expenses of graduates (completion) will be paid half a month after the completion (completion) of the date determined by the school.

The comprehensive medical insurance premium shall be implemented by the relevant regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education for studying in China and shall be purchased by the host colleges and universities. One-semester research students are 400 yuan/person, and the standard for one academic year or more is 800 yuan/year/person.

The on-campus dormitory provided by Tongji University for scholarship students is a double room. No individual application is required, and no additional fees are required.

Handling process

1. Starting from March 1, 2021, applicants can log on to the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship (Confucius Institute Scholarship) application website ( to apply for the Confucius Institute Scholarship. Log on to the scholarship website to inquire about recommending institutions and receiving institutions; submit application materials online, pay attention to the application process, review opinions and scholarship review results;

2. Tongji University will complete the pre-admission work online according to the relevant requirements of the Confucius Institute Headquarters and before the deadline set by the Confucius Institute Headquarters for the review;

3. The Confucius Institute Headquarters entrusts an expert group to conduct centralized evaluation: According to HSK and HSKK test scores and levels, taking into account the country and other factors, the scholarship evaluation will be completed and the evaluation results will be announced about 3 months before enrollment;

3. Tongji University will contact the winners, and after confirming their intent to study abroad, they will send the Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Studying in China (JW202 Form), and other admission materials to the recommending institution or the student. Winners can print their award certificates online.


Application materials

All applicants must log in to the Tongji University International Student Online Service System ( at the same time before the application deadline, fill in, and submit the "Tongji University International Student Admission Application Form" online and attach relevant information An electronic scan of the certification materials. (No registration fee required)

Applicants for the Master of Chinese Language Education in International Education must mail the following original documents to the Office of the Confucius Institute at Tongji University before April 30 (Address: Room 206, School of International Cultural Exchange, Tongji University, No.67 Chifeng Road, Yangpu District, Shanghai, China, 200092 Contact: Teacher Yao Tel: 0086-21-65981978). (One academic year and one-semester Chinese language students only need to submit the electronic version of the materials online, not the paper version of the materials)

Scanned copy of passport photo page;

A scanned copy of HSK and HSKK score reports (valid for two years);

Recommendation letter from the person in charge of the recommending institution;

Copy of graduation certificate and degree certificate. Certificates in languages other than Chinese or English must provide the original notarized copies of Chinese or English translations; fresh graduates will be required to provide the original certificate of expected graduation from their school. If enrolled, they must submit the graduation certificate when registering.

The original or notarized original transcripts of all courses at the undergraduate level. Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must provide the original notarized copy of the Chinese or English translation;

*Note: Notarized documents must be provided by Chinese embassies or consulates in China or foreign embassies and consulates in China.

The Master of Chinese Language Education must provide two recommendation letters from supervisors with the title of associate professor or above. (It is necessary to provide the original copy and indicate the contact information of the recommender);

Personal statement. About 1000 words, written in Chinese. The content should include personal study, work experience, academic research results, master's research plan, personal development goals after graduation, etc.;

List of published papers, abstracts, or other materials that can prove their research capabilities;

Priority is given to those who provide a work agreement for the teaching institution to be held after graduation. In-service Chinese teachers must attach an in-service certificate and recommendation letter issued by the institution where they are employed.


Matters needing attention

Applicants for a master's degree in Chinese International Education must deliver the paper copies of all the above materials to the office of the Confucius Institute at Tongji University before April 30, 2021, otherwise, they will not be admitted. Regardless of whether you are admitted or not, the above application materials will not be returned.

Application materials that are incomplete or do not meet the enrollment requirements will not be accepted.

If the application materials are falsified or filled out and submitted by others, once verified, the application qualification will be canceled.

Scholarship students shall register with the school on the registration date specified by the school every semester, otherwise, the scholarship qualification will be canceled.

Failure to register on time, failure to pass the entrance examination, dropout in the middle of school, suspension of scholarship, cancellation of scholarship qualifications.
