Tongji University was founded in 1907, and then successively set up a library, reading room, library, etc. Tongji University Library was formally established in 1934. After many relocations and reconstructions, the current Siping Road campus library was built in 1990 (the area after the expansion was 22,225 square meters). In 1996, the Shanghai Institute of Urban Construction and the Shanghai Institute of Building Materials Industry merged into Tongji University. In 2000, they merged with Shanghai Tiedao University to set up the Huxi Campus Library (with an area of 7188 square meters). In 2006, the Jiading Campus Library was completed (with an area of 34620 square meters). ), the German Library was established in 2016 (with an area of 2853 square meters), and the Tongji University Museum was placed under library management (4430 square meters). In 2018, Jiading remote library was established. The current library consists of the Siping Road Campus Library, the Jiading Campus Library, the Huxi Campus Library, the Hubei Campus Library, the German Library, and the Tongji University Museum. The total area is 75,323 square meters. Integrated management system and implementation of all loans and returns, implemented one-door management in 2004, and realized intelligent self-service book borrowing and returning in 2018.


The Tongji University Library has a wealth of collection resources, with more than 4.5 million paper books, about 12,331,700 e-books and dissertations, 700 current paper publications in Chinese and foreign languages, about 745,300 Chinese e-journals, and about 117.92 foreign e-journals. Million copies. In addition, the library has also ordered various well-known large-scale comprehensive databases and various authoritative full-text databases of professional society publications. Tongji University Library adheres to the tenet of "Readers First, Service First", and carries out literature circulation reading, electronic reading, domestic and foreign interlibrary loan, reference consultation, information literacy education and research, scientific and technological novelty, subject service, information analysis and research, Intellectual property information services, etc., and carry out multicultural activities to provide full service to the teachers and students of the school, for teaching and scientific research, and provide literature information services for brother colleges and the society.
Tongji University Library is a group member of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), a member library of the Chinese Higher Education Document Assurance System (CALIS), a member library of the Shanghai Regional Document Resource Sharing Network, and the first batch of member libraries of the Shanghai Foreign Languages Book Union Catalog Platform, Is the first batch of "Science and Technology Project Consultation and Achievement Novelty Check Center Workstations" approved by the Ministry of Education. In 1993, it was rated as A-level library by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Tongji University Library joined the Shanghai Central Library in 2004. The Intellectual Property Information Service Center of Tongji University was established in 2018, becoming the first batch of national intellectual property information service centers for universities.
