The University of Shanghai for Science and Technology is a key applied for a research university in Shanghai that focuses on engineering and has coordinated the development of engineering, science, economics, management, literature, law, and art. In 2018, the school became a pilot unit for the construction of "high-level local colleges and universities" in Shanghai.
The school's school context can be traced back to the Shanghai University founded in 1906 and the German Medical Engineering School founded in 1907. In 1906, the American Christian North and South Baptist Church established Shanghai University on the banks of the Pujiang River in Shanghai. In 1928, Liu Zhanen served as the first Chinese president of Hujiang University, and the school was fully integrated into China's national education system. After the founding of New China, the University of Shanghai in east-related faculties adjusted to the major schools and founded the Shanghai Industrial School at the University of Shanghai school site, later renamed the Shanghai Mechanical College (1959), Shanghai Institute of Mechanical Engineering (1960 - 1994 ), East China University of Technology (1994—1996). In 1907, the German doctor Dr. Pauln opened the German Medical School, and in 1912, the Engineering School was added. In 1922, the Chinese and French governments jointly established the Sino-French Institute of Technology on the original site of the German Medical School. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, it merged with the National Advanced Mechanical Vocational School which was moved from Chongqing to Shanghai to establish the National Shanghai Advanced Mechanical Vocational School. After the founding of New China, the restructuring of Shanghai senior mechanical vocational school was later renamed the Shanghai Mechanical College (1983 - 1996). In 1996, the East China University of Technology and Shanghai Technical College of Machinery merged to form the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology. In 1998, the school was placed under the management of Shanghai by the Ministry of Machinery Industry. In 2003, Shanghai Medical Device College (the Shanghai Medical College of Health was established in 2015 ) and Shanghai Publishing and Printing College were placed under the management of Shanghai University of Science and Technology. The towering university has passed the vicissitudes of life for a hundred years. It has been passed on from generation to generation. The school has two campuses, the Yangpu campus, and the Fuxing Road campus, covering an area of nearly 1,000 acres. There are 17 colleges (departments) and more than 25,700 full-time students, including more than 16,700 undergraduates and more than 9,000 postgraduates. There are 2,390 faculty members, including 11 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including double appointments), 78 national-level talents, 155 provincial and ministerial-level talents, 826 senior-title teachers, and 256 doctoral supervisors.
Relying on, serving, and leading the development of the industry for a long time, the school is a backbone university in the equipment manufacturing, medical equipment, publishing, and printing industries. Power engineering and engineering thermophysics, optical engineering, management science and engineering, and other disciplines have long occupied a leading position in China, and have a deep industry found in the two major fields of medical equipment and publishing and printing. In recent years, the school's discipline layout has been continuously optimized. There are currently 60 undergraduate majors, 8 first-level disciplines for doctoral degree authorization, 6 post-doctoral research stations, 27 first-level disciplines for master's degree authorization, and 18 master's degree categories. The school is one of the earliest universities in China to open international cooperative education. There are nearly 1,000 international students. It has established more than 170 institutions of higher learning in more than 30 countries and regions including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, and Ireland. partnership, built in the British International School and the German international School of two Sino-foreign cooperative education institutions.
The school has always adhered to a school-running strategy of coordinated development. Established the "Yangtze River Delta Higher Engineering Education Alliance" with Nanjing University of Technology, Zhejiang University of Technology, Jiangsu University, and Anhui University of Technology; and established the "Medical-Industrial Intersection Innovation Research Institute" and "Medical-Industry Intersection Graduate School" with the School of Medicine of Shanghai JiaoTong University. ; With Shanghai Industrial Automation Instrumentation Research Institute, Shanghai Power Generation Equipment Design and Research Institute, Shanghai Electrical Apparatus Research Institute, Shanghai Cable Research Institute, Shanghai Materials Research Institute, Shanghai Electric Tool Research Institute, Shanghai Industrial Boiler Research Institute, Shanghai Electric Group Central Research Institute Academies and others jointly established the "Shanghai Research Institute of Mechanical Industry Generic Technology" and "Mechanical Industry Shanghai Graduate School"; and carried out comprehensive strategic cooperation with COMAC, Huawei, Shanghai Electric, Bright Food Group and other companies.
