Xidian University is a national key university with the coordinated development of engineering, science, management, and liberal arts as its main subject of information and electronics. It is directly under the Ministry of Education. It is a key construction of the national "innovative platform for superior disciplines" and "Project 211". The predecessor of the school was the Radio School of the Central Military Commission, which was born in Ruijin, Jiangxi in 1931. It was the first engineering school created by Mao Zedong and other revolutionaries of the older generation. In 1958, the school moved to Xi'an, and in 1966 it was transformed into a local organization. In 1988, it became its current name.

 

Over the past 90 years since its establishment, the school has always been highly valued by the party and the state. It is one of the key construction projects of my country's "First Five-Year Plan" and one of the 20 key universities in the country approved by the central government in 1959. In the 1960s, the school became famous at home and abroad as the "Western Military Electric". Comrade Mao Zedong wrote inscriptions for the school twice: "Serving the people wholeheartedly" and "hardship and simplicity".

 

The school currently has two campuses in the north and south, with a total area of about 270 hectares and a school building area of more than 1.3 million square meters. The library has about 18.17 million volumes of documents, including about 3.04 million volumes of paper documents and 15.13 million volumes of electronic documents, covering all disciplines or majors of the school.

 

As of the end of November 2020, the school has a total of 36,543 full-time students, including 22,439 undergraduates, 11,448 masters, and 2,407 doctoral students; there are 43,207 undergraduates enrolled in online and correspondence education, and 53,959 online and correspondence education junior college students. . The school is one of the earliest universeities in China to establish information theory, information system engineering, radar, microwave antenna, electronic machinery, electronic countermeasures, and other majors. It has opened up a precedent for IT disciplines in my country and formed distinct characteristics and advantages of electronics and information disciplines. During the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, the school was approved for 8 national defense disciplines.
