Overview of Xinjiang University
In 1924, the predecessor of Xinjiang University, the Xinjiang Russian Language, Law, and Politics College, was founded, which opened the prelude to higher education in Xinjiang.
In 1935, the school was converted into Xinjiang College. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, a group of Communists and writer Mao Dun, philosopher Zhang Zhongshi, artist Zhao Dan and other progressives came to the school to teach, and put forward the idea of "taking nationality as the form and Marxism-Leninism as the content". Educational thoughts set off vigorous anti-Japanese and national salvation propaganda activities, and the school was hailed as "the second in the Anti-Japanese War".
In 1950, the Xinjiang Provincial People's Government merged the former Provincial Language Institute into Xinjiang College and renamed Xinjiang College as Xinjiang Nationalities College. In 1954, Xinjiang University for Nationalities was renamed Xinjiang University.
In 1955, when the Minister of Higher Education Yang Xiufeng inspected Xinjiang College, he instructed Xinjiang College to build Xinjiang University based on it. In May 1959, the Ministry of Higher Education decided that Peking University, Tsinghua University, Northwest University, and other institutions would support the establishment of Xinjiang University. In 1960, Xinjiang University was formally established, and the school entered a new period of development.
In 1978, the school was identified by the State Council as one of the first batches of 88 key institutions of higher learning and one of 16 comprehensive key universities. In 1997, the school was included in the first batch of national "211 Project" key construction universities.
In 2000, Xinjiang University merged with the former Xinjiang Institute of Technology to form a new Xinjiang University. The predecessor of the former Xinjiang Institute of Technology was the Sino-Soviet Non-ferrous Metals Mining Technical School, which was co-founded by China and the Soviet Union in 1953. In 1954, the Soviet Union transferred the shares of the school to my country, and the school was renamed Urumqi Mining School. Xinjiang Institute of Mining and Metallurgy was established in 1958, under the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, and was renamed Xinjiang Institute of Technology in 1966.
In 2004, the school became a university "co-constructed by the districts and ministries" by the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Ministry of Education. In 2012, the school was listed as a national construction university of the “Comprehensive Strength Enhancement Project of Universities in the Midwest”.
In 2017, it entered the ranks of the first batch of 42 first-class universities in the country. In 2018, it was identified as a university "jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region".
2. Institution Setting
The school currently has 26 colleges, 1 graduate school, 2 teaching and research departments, 36 party, and government agencies, and teaching auxiliary units.
3. Discipline, professional setting
The school has nine disciplines, including economics, law, literature, history, science, engineering, management, art, and philosophy, covering the main areas of senior specialized personnel training and scientific research. There are 2 national-level key disciplines (Chinese minority language and literature, applied mathematics), 1 national-level key cultivation discipline (population, resource, and environmental economics), and 3 double-first-class key construction disciplines (Marxist theory, chemistry, Computer Science and Technology); 6 autonomous regional-level peak disciplines, 7 autonomous regional plateau disciplines, and 3 disciplines (chemistry, engineering, and materials science) are among the top 1% of ESI in the world; in the fourth round of national discipline assessment, there are 7 disciplines enter the B disciplines, and 9 disciplines enter the C disciplines. There are 14 first-level disciplines authorized for a doctoral degree, 34 first-level disciplines authorized for a master's degree, 12 post-doctoral research stations, and 18 professional master's degree categories. It is the university with the most degree authorization and the most complete degree authorization system among universities in Xinjiang. The school currently has 95 undergraduate majors, including 69 enrollment majors; 29 national-level first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 9 provincial-level first-rate undergraduate major construction sites, 10 national characteristic majors, 18 autonomous regions in short supply of talents, and 12 autonomous regions Key specialty.
4. Scientific Research
In the past three years, Xinjiang University has an average annual scientific research funding of 233 million yuan, undertaking 1,495 various scientific research projects, undertaking 25 major key projects such as national key research and development projects, NSFC-Xinjiang joint fund key projects, and major bidding projects of the National Social Science Fund. The school currently has 14 scientific research platforms at or above the provincial and ministerial levels in the humanities and social sciences. Among them, there is 1 research base for the Chinese ethnic community awareness, 1 collaborative innovation center jointly established by the Ministry of National Security Research, 1 Belt and Road National Regional Research Center of the National People's Commission of China, and 1 Humanities and Social Sciences Key Research Base of the Ministry of Education There are 11 key humanities and social science research bases in the autonomous region; 1 collaborative innovation center jointly established by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Education.
6. Number of students in school
Xinjiang University currently has 35,899 students of various types, including 21,413 ordinary undergraduates, 8,906 postgraduates, 696 doctoral students, 176 international students, and 4,708 adult undergraduates.
The school has 1,920 full-time teachers, 953 full-time teachers with senior professional titles, and 801 doctoral teachers. 8. Exchange and cooperation
The school is the acceptance unit of the overseas study program sent by the China Scholarship Council. It is the Shanghai Cooperation Organization University, the independent enrollment of the Chinese Government Scholarship, the Confucius Institute Scholarship, and the Xinjiang Government Scholarship Program School. The school has successively signed educational exchange and scientific research cooperation agreements (memorandums) with more than 80 universities and educational research institutions in 27 countries and regions. There is a Russian Center of Xinjiang University and a test center for the Russian foreign Russian level test. There are practice bases in many universities in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and other countries. Set up 3 Confucius Institutes in Kyrgyzstan and Russia.
Since the launch of a new round of counterpart assistance in 2010, with the strong support of the Ministry of Education, with Tsinghua University as the team leader, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Wuhan University, Central South University, and the Renmin University of China as the deputy team leaders, Beijing Normal University, Dalian University of Technology Twelve colleges and universities including Tongji University, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Donghua University, China University of Mining and Technology, and Sun Yat-sen University were formed to support the establishment of Xinjiang University. Starting in 2019, six universities, including Northeast Normal University, Xiamen University, Tianjin University, East China University of Science and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and University of Electronic Science and Technology, have established counterpart partnerships with our school. There are currently 18 colleges and universities supporting (cooperating) Xinjiang University.
9. School conditions
The school has three campuses: the main campus, the south campus, and the north campus, covering a total area of 2.909 million square meters (about 4363 mu). In 2019, Xinjiang University's new campus project was approved for construction. The project is located in Himaquan New District, Shuimogou District, Urumqi City. The planned land area is about 2.47 million square meters (3711 mu) and the planned total construction area is 1.25 million square meters.
The total value of the school’s fixed assets is about 2.35 billion yuan, and the total value of teaching and research equipment is 780 million yuan. The library is the provincial central library of China's Higher Education Document Security System (CALIS), with a total of 3.465 million books and documents. The campus network and CERNET Xinjiang area master node, Xinjiang Education Area Network Control Center, and Urumqi Education Metropolitan Area Network have been built. It has a modern digital library and a first-class multifunctional gymnasium in the Northwest.
