Scholarship for international Chinese teachers

To meet the international community’s increasing demand for Chinese language education talents, promote the development of Chinese language education around the world, and help the growth of international Chinese language education talents, the Ministry of Education’s Sino-foreign Language Exchange Cooperation Center (hereinafter referred to as the Center) has established an international Chinese teacher scholarship (hereinafter referred to as the Center) Referred to as scholarship), focusing on training qualified overseas Chinese teachers. Confucius Institutes, independently established Confucius Classrooms, some Chinese test sites, relevant foreign educational institutions, Chinese teachers majors in universities/Chinese departments, relevant foreign Chinese teaching industry organizations, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad, etc. (hereinafter referred to as recommended institutions) Excellent students and in-service Chinese teachers can be recommended to Chinese universities to study and study Chinese international education and related majors.

The enrollment procedures for the 2021 Zhejiang University International Chinese Teacher Scholarship are now announced as follows:


(1) Enrollment target

1. Non-Chinese nationals;

2. Physical and mental health, good character, and learning;

3. Aspiring to engage in Chinese education, teaching, and related work;

4. The age is 16-35 years old (unified on September 1, 2021). In-service Chinese teachers are relaxed to 45 years old.


(2) Scholarship categories and application requirements

1. Master's degree students majoring in Chinese International Education

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 2 years.

Have a bachelor's degree. A minimum score of 210 in HSK (Level 5) and 60 in HSKK (Intermediate) are required in the Chinese test. Those who provide a work agreement or relevant certification for the teaching institution to be taught after graduation is preferred.

2. One-year trainee (Chinese language and literature direction)

Enrollment in September 2021, the funding period is 11 months. International students in China will not be admitted.

A minimum score of 180 in HSK (Level 4) and 60 in HSKK (Intermediate) on the Chinese test.

3. One-semester research students (Chinese language and literature direction)

Enrollment in September 2021 and March 2022, the funding period is 5 months. Those who have X1 and X2 visas in their passports are not admitted. Have a score of 180 in the HSK test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score.


(3) Scholarship funding content

The scholarship for international Chinese teachers includes tuition, accommodation, living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance. Please refer to the website of the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship (cis.Chinese.cn) for specific criteria.


(4) Application period

Registration will be open from March 1, 2021.

Deadline for online application submission:

1. May 10, 2021 (Entry in September 2021)

2. November 10, 2021 (entry in March 2022)


(5) Handling process

1. Applicants need to complete the online application on the international Chinese teacher scholarship registration website and the International Student Admissions System of Zhejiang University before the deadline and provide all the materials as required. Those with incomplete application materials or those who do not meet the requirements will not be accepted.

Please note: It is not necessary to mail the paper version of the application materials. The paper version of the application materials will not be reviewed and processed.


Proof materials related to all applicants:

1). Scanned copy of passport photo page.

2). A scanned copy of HSK and HSKK score reports (valid for two years).

3). Recommendation letter from the person in charge of the recommending institution.

4). In-service Chinese teachers must attach the in-service certificate and recommendation letter issued by the employment agency.

5). Applicants under the age of 18 must submit a certificate of entrustment signed by their guardian in China.


Applicants for the Master of Chinese Language Education must submit the following materials when applying online:

1). The original or notarized copy of the highest degree certificate

If the applicant is a recent graduate, he/she needs to submit the expected graduation certificate issued by the school he/she is attending. After admission, the original or notarized copy of the academic certificate must be submitted (the degree certificate must be obtained at the latest before enrollment); documents in languages other than Chinese and English must be attached with a notarized copy of Chinese or English translation.

2). The original or notarized copy of the undergraduate transcript

Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

3). Personal statement

No less than 1500 words, written in Chinese; the content includes personal study and work experience, application reason, and research plan.

4). Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors

Written in Chinese or English, signed by the recommender, and attached with a contact number and email address.

5). Published academic papers or academic achievements (if any)

6). "The 2021 version of the Zhejiang University Tutors' Intention Form for Accepting International Students"

Please note that this document should be provided by the applicant to the tutor on its own initiative, and the 2021 version must be used. Old versions are not accepted.

7). Work agreement of the proposed teaching institution after graduation (if any)

8). Residents of Mainland China (Mainland), Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan who have immigrated to foreign countries, as international student applicants, are required to provide proof that their Chinese nationality has been canceled according to the relevant regulations of the Ministry of Education.

9). Applicants who were born in a foreign country and obtained foreign nationality, and if both or one of their parents are Chinese citizens, (1) the applicant has obtained the foreign nationality certificate after birth; (2) the parents of the applicant before birth (a Chinese citizen) Proof of permanent residence in a foreign country.


2. Contact and select recommending institutions

1) Confucius Institutes operating for more than half a year/independent Confucius Classrooms: inquire at www.hanban.org

2) Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) test sites with the right to recommend scholarships: inquire through www.Chinese test.cn

3) Organizers of the overseas competition areas of the "Chinese Bridge" competition: Education and Cultural Sections (groups) of Chinese Embassies (Consulates), Confucius Institutes and related educational institutions, please contact chinesebridge@hanban.org


3. The receiving institution reviews the admission qualifications and submits pre-admission candidates to the Sino-foreign Language Exchange Cooperation Center. The center entrusts an expert group to conduct centralized evaluation: according to HSK and HSKK test scores and levels, taking into account factors such as country, the scholarship evaluation will be completed and the evaluation results will be announced about 3 months before enrollment.


4. After the receiving institution confirms the intention of studying abroad with the scholarship student, the "Admission Notice" and other materials will be sent, and the student can print the scholarship certificate online. Students must enter the journal at the time specified in the admission notice of the receiving institution.


(6) About the Chinese Bridge winners

Those who have won the 2021 "International Chinese Teacher Scholarship Certificate" in various Chinese Bridge competitions, log on to the website of the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship and Zhejiang University International Student Admissions System and submit application materials with the scholarship certificate.

(7) Other

1. Students with academic qualifications are required to participate in the annual review. For details, please refer to the "Annual Review Method for International Chinese Teacher Scholarship".

2. Failure to register on time, failure to pass the entrance examination, dropout in the middle of school, suspension of scholarship, cancellation of scholarship qualifications.

3. Applicants for the Master of Chinese Language Education will check the original graduation certificate and degree certificate upon registration. Those who fail to obtain the corresponding certificate will be disqualified for admission.
