Guangdong University of Foreign Studies is a key university in Guangdong Province with distinctive international characteristics. It is an important base for the training of international talents in South China, foreign language culture, foreign economics and trade, and international strategic research. At present, there are 19,826 full-time undergraduates, 4031 postgraduates for doctoral and master's degrees, and more than 23,000 adult undergraduates, advanced training and trainees, and foreign students.


1. History

The predecessor of the school was the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Languages and the Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade. Guangzhou Foreign Languages Institute was established in November 1964 and officially enrolled in July 1965. It is one of 36 universities directly under the former State Education Commission (now Ministry of Education). Guangzhou Institute of Foreign Trade was established in December 1980. It is a college directly under the former Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (now the Ministry of Commerce) and one of the founding units of the national-international economics and trade major. In May 1995, the People's Government of Guangdong Province merged the two universities to form Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. In October 2008, Guangdong Vocational College of Finance and Economics was incorporated into Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.


2. Campus situation

The school is located in Guangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China and the economic center of South China. It has 4 campuses with a total area of 2442 acres (including planning). The north campus is located at the northern foot of Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, covering an area of 939 acres; the south campus is located in Guangzhou University Town, Covers an area of 1095 acres; Dalang campus is located in Dalang, Guangzhou, covering an area of 258 acres; Knowledge City campus is located in Sino-Singapore Guangzhou Knowledge City, with a planned area of about 150 acres. The campus is lined with trees, bridges, and flowing water, birds and flowers are scented, and the environment is elegant.


3. Faculty

Since the establishment of the school, Liang Zongdai, Gui Shichun, Li Xiaoju, and other famous teachers have gathered in the school to teach and study, and have accumulated a wealth of spiritual and cultural wealth for the school. The school has a total of 2,129 faculty members and 1,421 full-time teachers. Among them, the proportion of professors and associate professors reaches 53.7%, and the proportion of masters and above reaches 95.2%.

4. Discipline development

The school has formed a "two-wheel-drive", multi-disciplinary and multi-lingual coordinated and sustainable development of foreign language subjects and non-foreign language subjects. It has 25 teaching units and 1 independent college (Nanguo Business School). There are currently 67 undergraduate enrollment majors, which are divided into eight disciplines: literature, economics, management, law, engineering, science, education, and art.


Among them, there are 22 national-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 18 provincial-level first-class undergraduate professional construction sites, 2 national-level professional comprehensive reform pilots, 14 provincial-level comprehensive professional reform pilots, and 8 national-level specialty professional construction points ( (Including 11 majors), 24 provincial-level specialty construction sites (including 27 majors), and 6 provincial-level key majors. There are a total of 28 foreign languages, making it the most foreign language school in South China. The school was granted the right to confer master's degrees in 1981 and the right to confer doctoral degrees in 1986. It is an earlier unit that was granted the right to confer masters and doctoral degrees after the restoration of the graduate school system in China. The school currently has 1 national key discipline and 7 provincial key disciplines.


It has 2 post-doctoral research stations, 2 first-level discipline doctoral programs, 18 second-level discipline doctoral programs, 12 first-level discipline master programs, 54 second-level discipline master programs, and 11 professional degree master programs. In several rounds of subject evaluation organized by the Ministry of Education's Degree and Graduate Education Development Center, our school's foreign language and literature subjects are among the top universities in the country. Four first-level disciplines were selected as key construction disciplines of high-level universities in Guangdong Province’s “reinforcement” promotion plan.


5. Talent development

The demand for graduates in the job market is generally stable, graduates are widely recognized by society, the employment rate continues to be at the forefront, and the quality of employment continues to improve. The school recruits students from more than 20 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the Central Government, and Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Our school currently runs 6 overseas Confucius Institutes and Confucius Classrooms: the Confucius Institute at the University of Sapporo in Japan, the Confucius Institute at the Ural Federal University in Russia, the Confucius Institute at the Catholic University of Santa Maria in Peru, the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Verde, the Confucius Institute at the University of Porto in Portugal, and Confucius Classroom at Ain Shams University, Egypt.


In addition, the English teaching master's degree education program jointly organized by the school and the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom and the English education master's degree program in cooperation with the University of Reading in the United Kingdom are running well and are well received by the Ministry of Education and students' parents. The school initiated and vigorously promoted the "Bay Area Campus" project, and jointly established the "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Portuguese Language Education Alliance" with Hong Kong and Macao universities to serve the national strategy. In terms of management internationalization, the school has implemented the overseas university suspension study program.
